On this post, just, heaps of my babbling and top notch drumming, subjectively speaking, of course. I need more drumming in my life, rhythmic, rolling, the backbone of the band!
Let's start it out with the almighty Weedeater, with Travis Owen on drums. This was from 2016, before I saw them, which, when I did, was in Chapel Hill, North Carolina with Carlos Denogean (RIP) and then in Denver with Ramzi Ateyeh (who is still their drummer, as far as I know). This dude is a maniac.
This is Chad Wackerman, who did a 7 year stint with Frank Zappa, which says a lot about the caliber of musician that he is. When I saw him, it was live in about 1983, I believe, and he was playing with Alan Holdsworth and Jeff Berlin. Went backstage at that one, with my pal Alexander Wallace IV, and Chad Wackerman was the most approachable of the three fellas. If you are a drummer and you know what Jazz Fusion is about, then you may know how fucking insane this guy is.
Years ago, in the my early blogging days when music blogs were a a dime a dozen, I was enlightened by some kind soul to the insano in the braino hardcore stylings of the Blood Farmers, with Harry Draino Burgan on drums. Seriously love the band, but this drummer is a true maniac at his craft...try to think of anything more bitchen that has come out of Bloomington Indiana? I really could do a whole post on hardcore bands with drummers that shred the fuck out, but this cat cat is something else, a style all his own.
I guess this one would be on page one of the D-Beat history book, but what's interesting to me is that I don't know if the drummer, John Maher, ever used that beat in another one of their tunes...and it's a bitchen song..."all this slurping and sucking"
I was late to the Sleep phenomenon, although some friends remember me being there when they played in Humboldt in about '93. Chris Haikus is a legend, I think, among the followers of this particular wave of this particular genre. This here is OM, which is basically Sleep minus the guitar player.
Everyone know Jimi as one of the best guitar players who ever lived and when you're that good, you have to surround yourself with top notch musicians. Can't remember the name of the dude (was it Chaz Chandler). who basically put the Experience together, but Noel Redding on bass and the mighty Mitch Mitchel were genius picks. That mid to late 60s style of drumming that a few folks like Ginger Baker and Keith Moon had, was fuckin' amazing to watch (in fact that is almost half the spectacle of drumming is just watching them work those drums). Mitch is a beast!
I don't know much about Simon Poole, except that in this video he looks, simultaneously, stoned as fuck and deep equally into the groove of the tune. Great song too...
Crash Worship is just Crash Worship, I haven't ran across an entity yet that quite has this sound...multiple drummers and from what I've heard the live show was something to behold.
Bill Ward! Enough said
John Bonham smashed the shit out of his drums
I'm not a big soloist guy, but the obvious pick for a song to showcase his skills is Moby Dick. I like this one though and this is some of his best drumming with the band.
Dude, some good listening here! Not as much Stewart Copeland as I'd expect from someone our age, haha! Kidding, but he's one of my all-time favorites (who needs a backbeat?) I've been following a few rad drummers the past couple of years. Louis Cole from Knower and also a group I think you'd love, ClownCore. JD Beck who plays with a crazy talented keyboardist name Domi. Larnell Lewis who plays with Snarky Puppy (check out their video for Lingus), and the great but now unfortunately late Gabe Serbian from The Locust. Managed to see him absolutely own the stage a few times before he died way too young. Cheers, ...deutsche!
