input = output

Here was the email I sent out to as many homies as I had email addresses for...

Sending out a blanket email to most of my homies....is that spam? Nothing quite like fried Spam mac n cheese! That's about what this amounts to pretty much...hahah Just a reminder that the blog is alive and well, a sort of release for me. It's intent is to share music suggestions and what's going on for old Mustard. I gave up facebook years ago, tried recently to get back and it was no dice But I miss seeing what everyone else is up to and what's spinning on your turntable. Send a pic, send a music suggestion or suggest that I leave you alone...hahah Anyway, here's the latest post...stay awesome y'all!

I do love y'all, you know who you are, even if it isn't reciprocated...giving is the gift not the reward. This post is about those responses...

...

Jess (The Bass Man), the heart and soul of the Ne'er Do Wells, playing at the Gilman in 94...wish it was a vid, cuz these dudes had a mountain of stage presence.

This is what's spinning on his turntable, a nice catchy little ditty. I never got the Danzig or Samhain bug back in their heyday, but as much as I preached the word of opening your mind, I was pretty closed minded in a lot of ways...I was just such a huge Misfits fan. Fuck, Evilive is maybe one of my top 20 live albums (ought to make a post about that, but it would get tough towards the end and nobody would agree with me anyway).

This was the hit for me, back about when this show happened in '83, woulda never known about the band and especially this tune, if it wasn't for the tape trading circles.

Ellen (of the personally indispensable Violet and Company Incense)  came though big time with this Black Metal outfit outta Iran. When I think back to all the metal heads I've known over time, including myself in my teen years, none of them (us) would have been brave enough to be Metal as fuck in a whacked out place like that...you probably get tortured or time in prison or worse, some kind of public mutilation or execution. Anybody old enough to have watched the Iron Sheik in WWF?

Jahn (1/2) of one of my favorite bands currently doing their thing, Molosser Crude mentioned the tune I posted from Zen Arcade...this hear is my favorite tune off the album...maybe...hahah...bitchen ass live performance. Cheers to you both in Sweden!

Sean, who did the layout for latest project I have been working on, plus a septic metric ton of artistic endeavors, turned me on to this harsh poser electrics outfit in response to my spam-tastic email. Turns out he's got their discography up at is always enlightening Selfish Few blog

Another shot of my (fingers crossed) bug...anyone up for a 16 hour round trip, road trip...hahah.

In jefe's reply, he offered up his old copy of this old classic,,,couldn't be more stoked. My Mom had it in her '73 buggalo when she gave it to me in college and I'm sure it was still in there when the dude who bought it me towed it away.

Brian responded with a photo from the lookout point in McKinleyville of Clam Beach at sunset

it's better to be pissed off than pissed on (unless you're into that kind of thing)

typed a search for "dream gif" and this was one of the ones on the first page...I was looking for something dreamy, but this one will do...hahah

I know everyone prefers straight hardcore early HD, but this album spoke to me like no other...song after song of perfection...this is one of those short but sweet ones...

This is my dream car right here and it looks like I'm going to buy her and make her street worthy again. Hopefully it can be a daily driver...donations being accepted...alms for the love of allah...hahah! Seriously though, the stars are aligning and this '63 is going to be a ton of work, but I need to put my energy into something good and of course to me, meaningful....wish me luck :)

Canadian garage recorded in '65 and a clean version released in '66...

Walking down the street on a foggy night
I saw a young girl standing under a light
Her face was pale and her skirt was tight
Had a five dollar bill, I felt alright
If I had my car, I would go for a drive
I had no car, yet I had my five
I walked over to her, I said-a "What's your name?"
"My name's Mary Jane, I live down the lane"
Oh no
I looked down the lane, at the end I could see
A room full of clowns looking back at me
A line of executives formed to the right
And if I'd stayed, I would have stood all night
She opened up the door and said, "Go on in"
I walked in first, and I pulled down the shades
She said, "Take it easy, don't be afraid
You got nothing to say, you're at a penny arcade"

My high school chum Stovepipe and Professor Noam Chomsky...student and professor at Harvard. According to my buddy, I gave this book to him in high school, but sadly I have no recollection of that event. It's actually more than sad when you consider that my mind is chalk full of shit, like the time that guy cracked my head open or that time I OD'd or...

Another old high school chum, Ki. turned me onto these guys recently, sent me down a serious Clowncore rabbit hole...fucking highly diggable!

When she was a kitten, some time ago, my Granddaughter named her Spot, but over the years I've come to call her just Pot. Absolutely nothing but love for her and I hope that when she does this to my robe (all the time), she is reciprocating that love.

This goes out to my pal Ellen and yes I am probably repeating myself, but when I'm in a black metal mood it's the raw stuff that I go to first. It's like hardcore punk but it's the hardcore they listen to in Hades...hahah I was curious what others thought and could not find anyone that lists Bone Awl as on of their favorite BM acts. I did find this list which was very informative, as I was not familiar with all the bands/songs on it...

Bathory- Eqimanthorn (every black metal band in existence owes at least part of it's sound to Bathory)
Venom- Black Metal (for obvious reasons)
Sarcofago- Satanic Lust (not strictly black metal but Sarcofago's image and music was a huge influence on Euronymous of Mayhem. Also a huge influence on "war metal" which is very similar to black metal in aesthetic and subject matter, but with less variance in sound.)
Mayhem- Freezing Moon (major players in the shaping of black metal as a musical movement)
Dissection- The Somberlain (one of melodic black metals starting points)
Burzum- Dunkelheit (arguably the best known black metal song)
Emperor- I am the Black Wizards (one of the first black metal bands to utilize symphonic type sounds. This song is a typical example of that.)
Belketre- Guilty (I'm putting this here not so much for the music, although it is really great, but for the attitude this band helped bring to black metal. Any black metal band that steeps itself in "secrecy" probably got the idea from this split with Vlad Tepes or any of the other bands involved in the Les Legions Noires group of projects.)
Xasthur- Murdered Echos of the Mind (To me, Xasthur took the concept of Depressive/suicidal black metal and made it a fully fledged subgenre.)
Wolves in the Throne Room- Queen of the Borrowed Light (the originators of "cascadian black metal". One of the few uniquely American black metal subgenres.)

Mr. Pickles has a message for ya! No matter what is going on in your life, every once in a while you've got to take a shit, right? Goodnight...all.

BABA VANGA...

My buddy Fredrik gave me virtual holler from Sweden and turned me on to the latest incarnation of the almighty Baba Vanga. My first thoughts while listening to the tune(s)...

A massively essential tune, as if  reaching out of the stratosphere, into a cosmic place

It's so fluid...like the blood beating through a tranquil heart

Looking into the past, of a future experience

the warm embrace of a familiar place surrounded by a slightly damp fog, the kind that leaves dew on the leaves of surreal plants in an otherworldly jungle

Baba Vanga Jimmy Bäckman, Bas, Fredrik Jensen, lead guitar
and lead vox, Martin Ljungsten, moogs, David Wirzén, drums, Lars Malmsten,
keyboard. All Photos by Meng Johnson.

Howdy Fredrik! Can you give me a history of the band, the who, what, why, where, when, how and so on?
Since the start of BabaV around 2016, there have been different constellations, me
and Jimmy are the only original members. The name was dropped by our former
drummer Kris Örnerfeldt and kind of fitted the representation of the journey down the
rabbit hole, since Baba Vanga maybe had magical powers and could see into the
future. BabaV has always been into surrealism and explorations. As a result, BabaV
has explored different kind of genres and still exploring for BabaV new genres and
new grounds.

Shit Fredrik, we've been virtual pals for quite some time now going back a little
ways on the old Mustard Relics Blog, but I've been a very real fan of Baba Van for
that same amount of time. During that time the band has evolved in a very fluid sense
to me, so, please tell me about this evolution and where it has taken the band to
today?
As a music constructor I always like to learn new stuff, and ever since I was a young
boy I listened to a lot of different genres, death-metal, punk, jazz, classical, reggae
and of course grunge. From Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, Curtis Mayfield to Wu-Tang
Clan side to side with flamenco music and G.Mahler and so on. The latest music of
BabaV is influenced by soul, rap, jazz, beats, psychedelic, surf and the outer space.

Where was the show that you sent pictures of and how did it go? Well received?
Do you have a flyer from that show?
The show was in a really cool building that used to be a church, it´s called “Skeppet”,
which means the ship. Located in Gothenburg, Sweden. It was a blast, good sound,
great vibes and a nice audience. And it was the premiere for our new constellation to
play live.

Most people don't know anything about who the band is named after, admittedly I
did not. Wikipedia's "Vangeliya Pandeva Gushterova (3 October 1911 –
11 August 1996), commonly known as Baba Vanga (Grandmother) was a
Bulgarian mystic, clairvoyant and seer. Blind since her early childhood, she spent
most of her life in the Rupite area of the Kozhuh mountains in Bulgaria." Tell me
about your take on this very interesting woman and if there is a connection to what
the band is about?
Who isn’t in to magic? The connection is the search and the willingness to be
committed. And experience things from different sides. The truth is out there…

Tell me about this newest incarnation of BV, this new release and the future of the band.
We are now five persons plus 1, that occasionally contributes with percussion and
backing vox, our former drummer August Erixon. Analog synthesizers, keyboards
and tape echo effects have been added to the soundscape. Our recent single “Can
you get it back+SMOOTH” was released earlier this autumn and more is to come in a
near future. Our next release will be the song ”Red Jazz Eyes”, and after that the
tune “Take me to the lake”. Hopefully we can record an LP soon with a bit of luck. We
are currently looking for business partners to work with and book new shows.

I ask everybody this one...what's spinning on your turntable (real or virtual) these
days?
April+VISTA, Wu-Tang Clan, Uran GBG.

cold calls are cool

Feel me?

Could always be worse...

Got a few of these to give away...just hit me up. Yeah right, nobody ever hits me up for freebies. Do you even own a CD player, is my question to you for the evening?

Grout in the early days. Good times...

Mr. Pickles, my best pal for 7 1/2 years now. Just took him to the vet and he is right at a trim/muscular 60 pounds. I took him mainly to get his nails done and the usual rabies shot, but figured since they were going to muzzle him anyway, may as well get the full check up done. I think he's worse when I'm there than when I'm not, at least that's what his vet tells me. She's known him his whole life pretty much, he had parvo as a pup and she saved his life. Anyway, he and I, bid you a good night and a pleasant tomorrow
