Grateful Dead

Repost from 2008...

GD2Now you're thinking I'm nuts, so I will promise you, this is the only Grateful Dead post I will do (EDIT: although now I am reposting it...does that count?).  This is from the Avalon Ballroom 1969, the year I was born.  This post is not as much about the music as it is about how I got a hold of it.  I've already talked about my first day of college in another post and how I met some guys, some of whom are friends over 20 years later.  On day two, Saturday there was several of these new friends hanging out together, Sang J., Alex E., Gage F., Tony D., Will H. and Ricky M.  We were probably just talking and hanging when this hippy guy from New Haven, Connecticut, Jason B., got into the mix.  I can't remember too many stories about Jason except I do remember that he was very down to earth and easy to hang out with.  Anyway he ends up asking all of us if we wanted to dose and everyone agreed that would be a the thing to do on a Saturday afternoon (Gage may not have, but he did go along for the ride).  It's weird how you remember some things and others you don't, but I remember those hits being from a sheet called Poison Apple. I probably did acid more than a hundred times and mushrooms many more than that, but these are the ones I specifically remember.  They had little green apples on them. Apparently they had come from Berkeley, Ca. and then gone all the way to New Haven on the East coast and then come all the way back to the West coast, via Jason and his panel truck, to Arcata, Ca.  That stuff had done more traveling than I had...to this day I've only spent time in Miami and New York to be stuck in their airports, as far as the East coast (EDIT: I have since made the drive from Kansas to North Carolina for my Son's high school graduation).  Anyway about a half hour later we were all feeling it coming on and for Tony and Alex at least, this was their first time tripping.  If you've ever been to Humboldt State you would know that the Eastern edge of the campus is bordered by a Redwood forest called the Community Forest, if my memory serves.  Well somehow as a group, I don't think we were totally peaking yet, we decided to, literally, go get lost in the forest.  We walked for a while, I don't know how long and ended up in a clearing as the sun was getting ready to set.  Jason takes off his back pack (bag of tricks) and proceeds to pull out all kinds of tripping hippy toys.  Beach balls, bubbles, incense, sparklers, weed and so on.  Well we, who barely knew each other 24 hours, had a blast through the sunset and into the evening with these toys.  By the time we decide to head back it was so dark that you could barely see your hand in front of your face.  We all realized that no one knew how to get back to campus and that we were essentially lost.  Of course tripping, no one really cared anyway.  I don't know how long we wandered around in the dark but all of a sudden I saw these shapes in the distance. Again, trippin.  I spoke up and asked, "are you people"?  There was no answer, so I asked again.  This time a guy answered in a disappointed voice and just said "yes".  We walked up and it was a guy and a girl who were probably looking to make out or whatever out in the woods.  Definitely not as noble an act as tripping.  He said it was down around this bend and sure enough we were only about a 200 yards through the woods to campus.  After that we ended up on the men's floor of Redwood Hall, where several of the guys were living.  I don't know in whose room, but we ended up doing some more tripping when Jason popped in this cassette.  I had only heard the Grateful Dead once before, but had always been sure that they sucked.  Well on acid they were just about the coolest thing I had ever heard.  That kind of, everything in the world makes sense, type of music and everything is going to be alright.  We kicked back there listening to this tape over and over till the buzz wore off. I don't really remember much else.  I did manage to get a copy of the tape we were listening to, from Jason and as you would expect it is a tape of a tape of a tape (to the umpteenth generation).  To this day I don't really much like the Grateful Dead when I hear them on the radio, but every once in a long while I can play this recording of this tune.   Of the guys there back in 87, I am still in touch with Sang, Gage and Alex (EDIT: and now Ricky M. and Jason B. thanx to Facebook).  Maybe they can remember more of the story but for now I'll just leave you with this song. EDIT: Here we (I) are (am) 7 years later and I've come a ways since this post was written.  Today on Facebook (wasn't a FB user 7 years ago) a buddy was talking about a Grateful Dead flashback and I remembered this tune and that experience, my response, "My 2nd day of college in 1987, I dropped acid with a bunch of guys. The guy who provided the doses was a Deadhead from New Haven, CT. We went off into the woods and proceeded to have one of the best trips of my life. The Deadhead came fully prepared, a backpack full of trippin' material, beach balls, bubbles, incense, sparklers, etc. When we got back to the dorms, about 4 hours into the trip, Deadhead says he's got some good Dead tapes. Being the stereotypical punk that I thought I was, I was like oh brother, what a great way to ruin a trip, but I kept my mouth shut. He puts on a tape from the Avalon Ballroom 1969 (coincidentally the year of my birth. When the tune Morning Dew cam on I was quite simply amazed and in the deepest sense utterly blown away. What a fucking beautiful, perfectly trip-worthy song. The murkiness and tape hiss of the late generation tape just added to the whole vibe. Still have a dub of that and when I listen to it, I am immediately taken back to that wonderful moment."  I lost all my files on my computer a couple of years ago so this song was no longer in my virtual crate.  Downloaded and listening, I forgot how bad the sound was.  7 years later and I've gotten acquainted with Audacity, so decide to see what I could do about the tape hiss.  It's still pretty murky, but I managed to clean it up a bit.  The 2015 version of a 1969 song, originally posted in 2008 and first heard in 1987...

Inane Intuitions©

may-dayLabor Day weekend, if there was ever an important American holiday, it is this one.  Representing so much struggle and here we are, about a hundred years later, heading back to those days.  People don't even know what's good for them anymore and once again the least fortunate are demonized, while gluttony is glorified.  Anyway, I procrastinated on my end of the month reports (even as I write this post), so I will be working this weekend.  I'm making more than I have ever made before, still nowhere near middle class, and this is the most stressful job I have ever had, but I guess I shouldn't complain (at least not today). MRFound a Black Metal Font... Was looking up lists of the goriest movies ever made, in that mood you know, most of which I don't care to watch, as rape seems to be the main theme. I got morals when it comes to my gore, feel me? So ran across this short flick, in the comedy gore vein...10 bloody entertaining minutes... [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPpwLCvPAME]; In case the link disappears, try this, Fork Lift Driver Klause My buddy is going to be posting all kinds of sick shit soon at his blog Selfish Few...add it to your bookmarks and check back every once in a while... possumThe possum I saved the other night from my dogs... Every once in a while, I buy records from another buddy of mine, Nevin, at his IFB Records...sometimes for dirt cheap. My turntable has been broke down for a minute, and ended up with a stack of records I hadn't listened to. Replaced my turntable recently, a broke down Technics, that just needed a belt, some tweaking and most importantly some TLC. So long story short, been spinning records and came across this band Rot in Hell, by way of their split 7" with Horders. These two tunes are lyrical and musical masterpieces, think, black metal meets 4AD, some really out there stuff...Nevin called it "dark folk". The band is actually a metallic hardcore band, but Discogs calls this record Neo-folk.  Goes without saying, definitely share-worthy... Rot In Hell - Das Tierdrama man is god, we are men, we are gods, god is man. his hand creates, his hand decimates. his hand soothes & his hand wounds. his hand guides, his hand denies. his hand calms & his hand harms. man is god, we are men, we are gods, god is man. his hand anoints, his hand destroys. his hand sedates & his hand annihilates. his hand is kind, his hand brings genocide. his hand donates & his hand devastates. man is god, we are men, we are gods, god is man. Rot in Hell - Heraclitus the reek of a dead foe, the sweetest memento, our glorious credo. saddle with burden, parasitical vermin, extinction is looming. fire will come and judge, and destroy all things. fire will come and judge, and consume all things. condemned by your virtue, violated by mistruth, nothing can save you. the heart of your darkness, decomposing and lifeless, thelema rises... fire will come and judge, and destroy all things. fire will come and judge, and consume all things. Initially I was playing this on 45 instead of 33 (message to all people releasing vinyl...it doesn't take any effort to let us know what fucking speed to play your God damn records at) and I REALLY dug it...here's these tunes with what sound like a woman with a very beautiful voice... Rot in Hell - Das Tierdrama (45 rpm) Rot in Hell - Heraclitus (45 rpm) Let's finish this off with a Woody Guthrie tune from an uber-rare 10" LP I just got... Woody Guthrie - It Takes A Chain Gang Man
