Septic Death - Cathay De Grande 03-29-84

 I was in the ninth grade when this concert was recorded and it reminds me of skating back and forth to school everyday at that time.  I was never a good pool or ramp skater, even with the help of Jay Smith who was my buddy Dale's older brother.  Dale and Jay and I would go up to Marshal High School in LA and do downhill stuff.  Dale and I did a mean catamaran.  I was always good at using the skateboard as my means of transportation though.  In about 1988 you could catch me up in NorCal skating in between HSU and Villa De La Valle on the 101 highway.  When we lived in the bottoms Sang used to drag me behind his bike up to campus.  Good times. I searched all over the place to see if I could find a live picture of Septic Death and this is the only one I could find here, http://homepages.nyu.edu/~cch223/usa/septicdeath_main.html .  I don't think I'm very good at doing that kind of computer research.  I did find a ton of pictures with septicdeath.com and pusfan.com written across them but 99.99% of those were of records.  If I could find my flyer collection I could have found one for this.  Is there a good punk rock, hardcore picture site?  You know, live shots.  If there isn't maybe you could start one.  If you made it a blog you would get tons of hits and very few comments.  Seriously though if you know of something like that let me know so I can link up to that.  There is a ton of Septic Death music out there and I'm sure a lot of live stuff too.  You can do the research on that.  If you were rich you might be able to buy the actual records.  I am pretty sure I got this bootleg from my long lost friends Ron K. and Bob K. that I have mentioned before.  It's not a soundboard but I think it's decent sound quality if you can ignore the idiots talking through some of the songs.  If you know of a really good soundboard recording send me the link.  the rip I made is pretty much exactly how it sounds on the tape.  I hope you like a song or two.  I got this one in about 85 or 86 when I was still in high school.  I had seen a review of the tape in MRR or Flipside and got it from the band in the UK.  The drummer Ade wrote me a letter and we ended up writting back in forth for a while and trading music.  I got him a copy of the We The Living 7" and we traded several tapes.  Remember those days before the internet when you would mailorder and trade stuff with people all over the place.  Ade was a super cool guy and I ended up getting several SM and comp 7''s from him that I will have to share in the future.  He turned me on to Active Minds which is definately in my top 10 all time bands.  I will share those guys in the future too.  These guys, http://www.7inchpunk.com/ have a few SM posts that you should check out.  This is a good rip the tape was just pretty lo-fi to begin with.  The track listing is on the above scan and if you'll notice there are 18 tracks but only 17 posted.  When I was editing the rip I tried like hell to find 18 and listened to it over and over but only came up 17.  Oh well, give these tunes a listen, because they were on the cutting edge at the time. 01 , 02 , 03 , 04 , 05 , 06 , 07 , 08 , 09 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 What a trip, I found this on youtube, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HX91kfNbQq0

Strong Intention - Disgrace To The Corpse Of Hardcore CDr

Have been enjoying the power violence stuff on Low-Res Viscera , so I thought I would do one.  I don't have a lot of newer stuff but I like this one.  Bought this CD along with several others three years ago from here, Crucial Blast , aka The Darkest Hills.  Great store if you ever want to find this kind of music or any other extreme music.  I hadn't heard Strong Intention before but they were under power-violence and had some great reviews so I got this.  I was not disappointed and actually ended up getting two more CD's.  This one I know is out of print because I have # 19 out of 50 made for the tour with Cripple Bastards they did in 2002.  Check out their site Strong Intention but most of their stuff is out of print.  What they do have is cheap so support the band if you like the music. Slayer - Decade Of Agression

Urban Dance Squad - Clashing Perspectives

  A couple doodles I did when I was a substitute teacher about four years ago.  Sometimes the teachers would have something for me to do with the class and other times I was just a babysitter.  I liked subbing for Lee, an art teacher who is now a local tattoo artist, because I got to do art with the kids.  Physical Education was fun too because I would always have the kids play dodgeball.  When I would do the 9th graders there were the popular jock kids who thought they were so good but the best one at dogeball was this chubby short kid who always got picked on.  He could catch most of the balls thrown at him and the ones he couldn't he easily dodged.  He also had a pretty good arm and would bean the crap out of kids that picked on him.  It brought me back to my school days.  I never picked on anyone and for whatever reason I never got picked on either.  I hung out with the stoners that would later become gangsters in junior high and in high school I was one of the punks.  The punks at Burbank High seemed to get along with everyone.  We used to smoke cigarettes across the street in this parking lot while the stoner/gangsters would smoke weed off in a hidden corner.  When the school cop would roll up we would give a whistle so those guys knew the cops were coming.  Good times.  Anybody remember Urban Dance Squad?  I know, lame big record label band, but this was what was going on for a bit there.  Rap mixed heavy rock.  This was before Rage Against The Machine.  I don't know a whole lot about them except for what I read here, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urban_Dance_Squad and this is the only thing that I have by them, which is a promo CD for the album, Life 'N Perspectives Of A Genuine Crossover.  Some of my Bro's in college were really into these guys and I guess they grew on me too.  Maybe you might like a song or two. One Yellowman and Fathead

Ever since I saw Yellowman at Berkeley High in 87 I have been a big fan.  He was not the most politically correct but there is just something about his music.  Who wants to be politically correct anyway.  I did another post of him and Fathead not too long ago.  This one is good too especially in terms of the quality because it's on CD, but I like the first one better.

Rudimentary Peni

One Man Running - Live KHSU

I haven't been doing this for very long and don't know a whole lot but I am learning.  So far the only comments I have received are from friends I've had for 20 years and fellow bloggster Jason at Lo Res.  I have gotten some links but some sites haven't added me for whatever reason.  It's all good though.  I know I am very random and not sticking to one style of music so that may be a turn off.  I wanted to ask all that have visited to give me some criticism so I can make this a better site.  I do have technical short comings and if anybody can tell me how to upload files bigger than 7mb on wordpress that would help tremendously.  I'm wondering now if I really want a lot of people coming here or not but I know that I will keep it going because it's a blast.  Please keep coming back.  Another One Man Running post here.  This one is the last one, as I've already posted all that I have.  I didn't think I had the song Resin Scraper but here it is.  I probably saw these guys play two hundred times but never knew the names to all the songs.  Sorry about that.  I was there when this recording was made and for those of you who haven't heard OMR, you have to dig this.  Maybe you'll like a song or two.

VA - Message From America Hardcore Has Come Of Age

I can't stand bullfighting or the running of the bulls, for a variety of reasons but I like these pictures.  If you've ever watched a bullfight from beginning to end, you know that the bull is tormented and tortured for a long time before the matador even enters the picture.  By the time the matador shows up the bull is so exhausted you can hardly recognize him from the figure of energy and power he once was.  For those of you that don't know spanish, mata means kill and when you dor you have killer.  Maybe it's a cultural thing but I can't believe a guy whose got his nuts squeezed into a pair of tights, killing a tired bull is macho.  It's bullshit.

On to another post I don't know and could not find anything out about.  Maybe I just don't know how to look.  This just a good east coast hardcore comp.  I recorded this from an LP up at KHSU back in college.  The radio station at the university had an extensive punk and hardcore section thanx to some right thinking individuals.  I used to record stuff there all the time.  I remember after we played Capital Punishment's, Jodi (is my bloody love) on the air the station manager scratched up that side of the 7".  Yet another asshole who just didn't understand.  I think the AF tracks are a different recording than you may have heard before.  I played this album or at least parts of it over and over again.  Little did I know that the song Living In The Streets by Seizure would be relevant to me later in life.  I really was a loser.  Anyway this is a great comp and I hope you enjoy a tune or two...

EDIT: I've had this post up for 7 years and to this day have never gotten a complaint about it.  Recently I uploaded the album to Youtube, thinking some folx there might want to here it.  Well, yesterday got the message below from YT saying the tunes had been taken down.  I respect that, if you don't want your out of print shit out there for people to enjoy, that is your right, all props for blessing it with us in the first place.  Rather than getting a complaint here, knowing they don't want their shit out there, I have taken down all the tunes.  If you look for it you can find it out there (just bought one for $20 on Discogs), but for now it will just be a Mustard Relics mystery...

(NYC) Mayhem - Live

 Thanx to Seeing Red (see my links) for this picture.  That site has a fantastic layout and content.  You know this picture is so intense to me and somehow stands out from the rest of the great pictures they have there.  Like so many there it's a pretty powerful image.  The ultimate statement and he just looks so serene.  In a weird way it makes me think of suicide bombers although except for killing themselves they have very little in common.  How many people in America would be willing to do that?  I know they say that soldiers are willing to lay down their lives but I think they are really hoping they are going to luck out and live. I really have no idea about this post except that I got it in about 1987 from Ron K. and Bob K.  They, especially Ron used to turn me on to stuff they thought I might like all the time.  Mayhem fell into the category of bands I liked in the hardcore vein.  While I was uploading this I looked all over the place for any mention of them and found nothing except here, http://damagingnoise.blogspot.com/ .  This site has a lot of really good stuff (even SPK, Sang).  Well give this a listen and maybe you'll like a song or two.  I listened to the songs after posting this and apologize about the sound quality.  I had it red lining when I recorded it onto the computer and have it on 320kbs.  Still good stuff I hope. Yellowman / Fathead - Bootleg

 The King Yellowman must have a thousand record releases but I thought I would bring you what I think is a rare one.  The above album cover is not the record I have on tape but it has seven songs in common.  My buddy Dirty Steve had this bootleg record with no labels and just plain white everywhere.  He told me it was super rare and I liked it so I made a recording.  I really don't know anything else about it.  I have searched the record stores for more stuff like it and know that Yellowman and Fathead did several recordings together.  I have another one on CD that I may post at a later time.

I had another really good Yellowman Fathead CD but I loaned it to a neighbor and the asshole took it with him when he moved out.  At the time I was living in these apartments in San Diego.  The CDC (Center for Disease Control) rented out several of the apartments as a half way house for Tuberculosis patients.  The only place I've heard more coughing is in the smoking section of a bingo parlor.  These TB patients couldn't leave the apartments because they were still kind of contagious so I would go out and buy liquor and party with them.  These were the only people I would hang out with except my Native brother Tom who didn't have TB but lived in the apartments too.  During this time I was drinking 3 fifths of rum a day and was in pretty bad shape.  One of the TB patients caught me talking to the plants one time when I was detoxing pretty hard.  Not the best of times for Mustard.  Anyway give these tunes a listen and maybe you'll like one or two.

Dirty Rotten Imbeciles

Well this is kind of a lame post in that I am offering nothing directly from my collection, but I had to do some DRI.  I do own the Dirty Rotten EP, the Dirty Rotten LP, the Violent Pacification EP and Dealing With It but those are all on vinyl and I am still absent a turntable that works.

In about 1984 DRI were my first exposure to really fast hardcore.  I mean they just blew me away.  This band had so much to say and so much music for you in very little time.  I played the Dirty Rotten LP over and over again, trying to read along with the lyrics.  I just couldn't keep up and that just left me more in awe of the band.  When they completely crossed over I was really disappointed, even though there were metal bands I liked at the time.  I just thought that you either played metal or punk but not both at the same time.  On top of that I just didn't like the way they sounded anymore.  Now my point of view is totally different and I think bands can change, evolve or do whatever pleases them.  Just like when Bad Religion came out with Into The Unknown.  If I don't like the sound of a band now then I won't complain, I just won't buy their stuff.  I still don't think DRI played very good metal, but that's my opinion of course.

Searching the web and sites that I already enjoy I found most of the stuff I have plus a little extra.  These sites probably offer a little better sound quality anyway.  Be sure and leave a comment for them if you get a chance.

Long Beach Dub Allstars

 These guys were kind of the leftovers of Sublime plus some more, after Brad Nowell died of a heroin overdose.  I was not a big Sublime fan ever but grew into liking a few of their tunes.  I know LBDAS are not hardcore and are what some of my friends might call WASPafarian music, but I really like these guys though and some pretty big time performers like Barrington Levy, Half Pint, HR and Mad Lion are featured on thier recordings.  These guys do their own stuff and really know how to put the jam on backing up other performers.  Please go to www.skunk.com if you like the music and buy their stuff, my recording are crappy quality anyway.  I would like to post everything, but I have a feeling they wouldn't like that so I am once again just posting the tunes I dig and hopefully you'll dig a song or two.

Killdozer - 12 Point Buck

First off I want to say that I'm sorry I haven't posted in a while I have just been super busy.  I have not lost interest or motivation and in fact check the site for comments daily, it just takes more time to do an actual post.

The above picture I took at Walmart last weekend and it just was perfect as I was leaving this giant lame ass store to see this pile of snow.  Snow can be so beautiful as it falls and then lays there untouched on the ground but once it falls into human hands it becomes something else. I am just a guilty as anyone else.

On a positive note I wanted to post one of my favorite albums.  I think it was Doug and Lisa that turned me on to Killdozer but I could be wrong (I often am).   At the time I got turned on to these guys I was pretty much only listening to fast music, a somewhat narrow view of music. I like to think that over the years, I've opened my mind a bit.  About the same time in 87 or 88 another friend of mine turned me onto the Violent Femmes.  College music right?  Well Killdozer is on a whole other level.  To this day some of the heaviest stuff out there.

I wish I could remember more about this time in my life.  Boner emailed me the other day, "Hey, i remember once you took me out to a house in Mickeyville with a dog that would only respond to commands in german, Do you remember that?what was your motivation? were you on shit at that point? no accusations, no guilt thing, when one points a finger, 3 point back.  just curious. that was the first time i heard the band  Dead Horse. that was pivotal for me."  I just do not remember.  Oh well at least give Lupus a listen and otherwise maybe you'll like a song or two.

D.Y.S. - Brotherhood

Feeling kinda straightedge today so I thought I would post some DYS.  Actually I am straightedge everyday now except for the coffee and cigarettes.  I do actually have this 12", which I have seen sell for $150 on ebay (that may be what I do with it if I ever need the $$).  I got it from Ron of Naturecore back in the mid 80s for a couple of bucks along with several others like the Nihilistics 7".  Ron was a super cool guy who turned me on to a lot of cool punk rock ideas and music.  I also have the Fire & Ice CD, which when I got it, I thought was going to get some more good tunes by a band that I already knew was good.  I was wrong...other than the Brotherhood tracks the CD totally sucked.  I am not too familiar with the whole Boston scene, where these guys are from, but from what I understand, like a lot of scenes it sucked as time went on.  You know, no matter where you go you have assholes trying to beat you down and Boston was no different from LA, New York or so many other scenes in the 80s. The macho-ization of hardcore. My old buddy Erich, infamous or legendary, depending on what camp your from, would call it boyscout hardcore. Snot - Get Some

  Well I have been a lazy cheater lately so I thought I would do a Snot post.  I don't know if there is a connection there.  This is the third post I have done from work and that's why they've all been CDs.  I haven't got a scanner yet at home even though there is one available to me so I've been grabbing covers where I can get them on the web.  Like my father in law used to say, I may not be the best but I'm not the worst and I do the best I can.  What I really need to do is get a turntable and that scanner so I can start doing 7"s. ddy of mine from San Diego, Dirty Steve got me into these guys.  He let me live at his house for about a year while I was down and out but by the time I moved out I think he hated me.  I was an ugly drinker at that time and did some things I regret.  You know it's funny though  because that crowd were all heavy drinkers but they really looked down on me because I was a sloppy drunk.  Dirty Steve did save me a couple of times from my stupidity but eventually it got to be too much for anyone to handle.  A really pathetic time in my life.  Some of the best tattoos I have I got while living at that house by a guy named Charles from New Orleans.  I wish I was still in touch with him.

Anyway Snot didn't last too long because the singer was killed in a car wreck along with his dog from the cover.  Kind of a sad story from what I've read.  They are a pretty rockin band but I don't know how seriously you can take them with lyrics like "my balls your chin".  I also have a live CD I will post in the future.  I don't know if this is still in print but it's on Geffen so you can have a look for yourself.  Enjoy a song or two.

This is just a cool comp on Hellcat Records released in 1999.  You can get the whole thing here, http://www.hell-cat.com/ .  Good record label site.  I like these mixed comps where it's not just one music type even though there is a general flavor.  This one has that reggae hardcore feeling going on and has several songs by Rancid or it's band members contributing to other singers.  I am not a big Rancid fan, even though I saw them at one of those Warped Tour all day kind of things with like 10 or 15 bands.  I can't remember most of it because I was too drunk.  I liked Operation Ivy a hell of a lot more and got to see them in Humboldt at HSU along with some other not so good Lookout bands.  I remember this wanna be skinhead local thought he was going to steal Slam's boots.  I was going to let him try but I decided to save him an ass beating.  Early on before Slam would decide to be your friend he would put you in a pretty brutal choke hold until you passed out.  I'm sure a lot of my friends remember that.  After that you were a friend for life.  This is still in print so I'm just going to post my favorite songs.  Maybe you'll like a song or two.

Infest - Slave

Well I've been wanting to do this post for a while and without a doubt Infest was my favorite hardcore band.  If DRI had not of crossed over, and don't get me wrong I like some metal but DRI sucked at metal, they would have been doing the stuff Infest did.  Two old buddies of mine from junior high Ron K. and Bob K., after high school, got me into these guys when they first came out.  I have most of their stuff on cassette.  Later on I got the split flexi with PHC and the Live on WMFU.  Ron and Bob were some pretty nutty characters in the LA hardcore scene back in the late 80's.  I wish I had access to their collections or was even still in contact with them.  Match is my only friend that would know or remember them.  These guys would go to shows anytime anywhere as long as fast music was being played and they were always making bootlegs.  Fenders in Long Beach, parties in East LA or Pacoima, the Olympic, wherever.  They would get their asses kicked and still come back for more.  I have all kinds of stories about these guys but I will save them for another time...

Well here it is 2008 and it's butt cold in Nowhere Kansas.  If you are unfamiliar with Nowhere Kansas, check out one of my favorite cartoons, Courage the Cowardly Dog.  On top of everything else my heater blower went out on my car, which among other things leaves me without a defroster so I have to leave the window cracked so the windshield doesn't fog up.  Not much good going on for me right now except my friends and this site.  Ed did me yet another huge favor and sent me some more One Man Running.  He said, "these are from the KHSU benefit at the Beer Gardens.  I think the date was May 9th or May 14th, 1991."  My memory is pretty much like bobbing for apples, but I just have a good feeling about my memories of this band.  I remember one of the many parties we played together, I got the chance to sing the song Resin Scraper with them.  I wish I had that song to share with you, not the one I sang on though.  That party was at one of Dawn and Cathy's houses, on the west side of West End Rd, in the garage.  One thing about some of the bands in Humboldt County is that we would play anytime, anywhere, all the time.  Well enough of that, enjoy a song or two...
