Antiseen - Commando

Just a real short one but I imagine everyone has been busy with family and what not.  Yesterday I was with my father in law as he died at home on Christmas day.  A peaceful death that was sad yet amazing.  I think that's the way I want to go even though it's not the way I lived my life.  One minute he was breathing and the next he wasn't.  I guess it's that way with everyone no matter how they die.  He was a real cowboy, cattle rustler, truck driver who lived a hard life of his own.  I wish I had a picture to share with you but instead here's a picture that makes me think of him.

Here's a song I've been wanting to post.  I love it when great bands cover great songs by great bands.

Sparklehorse - It's A Wonderful Life

Wonderful life Well I'm going to be gone for 4-5 days and I wanted to leave you with something really mellow for the holidays.  I mean really mellow.  A good friend of mine that I met in San Diego, who in that small world world way turned out to be a close friend of Jodie F.'s from Humboldt, turned me onto this band.  I was in my super heavy drinking, starting to be solitary way.  It's about as far from the power violence hardcore stuff you know I dig, as music can be, but it has it's time and place.  Those mellow, dreamy, thoughtful, reflective or even romantic moments when you're in the mood.  These guys are popular, I gather, with the people who listen to this kind of music regularly.  You can go to their website here, http://www.sparklehorse.com/ . I have branched out a bit as I've aged and I hope you guys give it a listen. Grimace - Quagmire CD

Grimace Well I wanted to post this one before Marten changed his mind about letting me put it up.  I got my copy before it officially came out so I have a homemade cover (above).  I couldn't find much out there about the band or the now famous label, Bongload Records (thanx to Beck, who I met around this time when Garden Weasel played with Grimace and Muzza Chunka in Garberville).  I did find a used copy for sale by some guy for $4 and a little bit about Marten.  It said that he was now (15 years ago) in the band Crutch on the same label.  Well this release was a lot different from the DEMO, which was good, but the cd takes the band to a whole other level, especially in terms of the drumming.  Rob was more of a standard metal drummer while Darin had his own jazzy rockin kind of style, that fit well with the rest of the band and their unorthodoxy.  The rest of the band had played together for a bit longer and were tight as fuck.  You know though, this CD is one of my favorites but it doesn't compare to seeing them live.  We (WD40, Garden Weasel, Grout) played with them a hundred times and I never got sick of that.  They were always heavy and seemed super tight live, and had a really rockin energy.  Got any live stuff I can post Marten?  The only show or party I remember specifically was the show we played with them and Muzza Chunka down in Garberville.  Not much of a turnout, which meant people missed a really good show.  Great guys to hang out with either individually or together.  Five very different guys that just clicked.  My two faves are Dirty Old Man and They Came To Me (which I think was about people like me, temporary Humboldt residents).  Anyway, give it a listen and maybe you'll like a song or two...

Garden Weasel - Demo

gw3Well I hadn't posted our demo yet and Boner requested to hear CAH because it was his favorite song, so here it is.  Ed had to send this to me along with the track listing, because I couldn't find my copy,  and don't have the original insert.  I do have the original drawing Alex did for the cover (above) which I love, it pretty much was the band at that time.  I remember this being a long pain in the ass to record but once again check out the Dead Ed link to get more accurate details.  I can't even imagine what these big time bands do in the studio for weeks and months at a time.  The project itself as with most demo tapes was completely DIY and a lot of work went into the making of it.  I don't remember how many we made but I think around 100.  I like some songs on here especially the ones other people collaborated on.  How could you not like John Quitner's (of 50 Foot Hesher, et al) Stoner Fetus with "Lock up the ding dongs and hide your corn, I was taking bong hits before I was born".  He also wrote Soapscum another silly satirical one.  Questions, Match wrote and probably could have been our hit if we had a different singer, or a singer instead of a screamer.  We never were looking for hits though as long as one or two people enjoyed what we were doing.  I will never forget when I had Match come up and sing the tune at a gig at the Jambalaya.  I changed how I sang the song after that because he showed me how to do it right.  Understand was a ska/punk thing and along with Out of the Car one of my favorite songs.  Without Direction was a WD40 tune, you should go to that post and listen to the difference.  I like them both.  Anyway give this piece of history a listen and maybe you'll like a song or two.

Mikey Dread

md  I borrowed this tape from someone in San Diego and never gave it back.  I think I did that on purpose so I want to take this opportunity to apologize to anyone I ever did that to and if you did that to me I want my stuff back.  I looked up Mikey Dread the other day and saw that he was a pretty pivotal guy as far as reggae in Jamaica.  Kind of the Jamaican Rodney on the ROQ.  It prompted me to look up reggae in Wikipedia here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reggae and I learned a lot of things.  Of course with my short term memory almost completley gone I promptly forgot them.  I have found mistakes on Wikipedia before.  There is ska, rocksteady, dancehall and roots.  Anyway I really like this song and it's the only one on the tape I like. Grimace - Demo

G1 grimace2You know hands down Grimace is my favorite metal band, I'm not just talking, in Humboldt, I mean fucking ever.  Not just because I knew, played with, partied with and respected them as musicians but they really knew how to put on a show.  They practiced at the Manilla chicken coups (in the master suite) where we practiced and I used to love to just sit in on their jams.  Not wanna be tough guys like so many metal bands singing about macho satanic bullshit.  Cool guys and each one different from the next.  Marten seemed like he was the one making things happen, a ripping guitar player and was the glue that kept the band going.  Nick was pretty out there, had the most extensive self administered tattoo collection I had ever seen and was tripped out when it came to his solos.  Andy was a thumpin' good bass player, I think he was a music student, and could play lots of instruments.  Chuck was the singer and all you have to do is listen to the band or One Man Running to hear how much soul and emotion was in voice.  Rob was your typical stoner hesher,  a pretty solid drummer, and a hell of nice guy.  This is the only demo I have of theirs so I don't know if there are anymore.  Good stuff, but I am waiting on Gage to get a hold of Marten to see if he'll do a better write up of the band and give me permission to post their CD on Bongload Records, which is out of this world good and way before their time.  This is another one of those bands that could have made it big on the scene outside of Humboldt County.  Enjoy a song or two.

Saint Vitus - Thirsty And Miserable

mr2a  I am not trying to preach or put anybody down but I have to get this story out of the way.  The first time I got drunk was with Gilbert B., Skylar S. and Darren G. when I was thirteen (smoking herb at 10 with Kevin A.) and man was I cool.  Gilbert used to steal baby food jars full of random liquor from his folks and we used to drink them in the alley on the way to Luther Burbank Junior High.  In high school it got a bit heavier.  Match, Deutsche (straightedge most of the time), Ivan, Enoch and I were drunk just about every weekend (and some weekdays), followed up by fresh donuts at midnight.  Match and Enoch could buy at some liquor stores, sometimes.  Anna H., Norm G., Derrik C. or Ivan's brother would buy for us.  We could also get cases of Stroh's from Finn P., whose dad worked for the company for to $2.  Beer bonging (funneling) became popular at some point and we were quite proud of that.  We rarely had to pimp.  In college it was taken to another level.  Everybody drank and did dope of some kind.  The list of people that I did that stuff with is endless.  It was nothing to get drunk, gettered, stoned and trip at the same time.  Once we were 21 in Arcata the row of 5 or 6 bars (especially the Alibi), plus Casa de Que Pasa, were the places to be.  Probably the best paying gigs we ever played were at Angelo's, when you add up the cost of all the beer we drank.  I don't think I ever played live with out being drunk and/or high.  But you know it was all good to be messed up all the time, because I was functional and so were many of my friends.  It may have been a problem at that point or maybe it always was but the real trouble didn't start until I moved to San Diego.  It was then that, when it was my turn to go up to the bar and buy the pitchers, that I would sneak in a shot or two each time.  People were always wondering why I was so fucked up.  It was about that time too that I would regularly do the hair of the dog with little airplane bottles (dollar bottles of bliss) in the mornings to get rid of the hangover and stop the shakes.  After I lost my job it was the end of the line.  I had a substancial savings and for the next two years I worked myself up to 3 fifths a day drinking from morning til night.  At this point I wasn't going out anymore except to shake my way to the liqour store when it openned at 9am.  They closed at eleven.  It was the most important thing in the world to know that.  I had some contact with people but in the truest sense I was absolutely alone.  I don't quite know how to describe that feeling.  I tried to quit cold turkey several times, but I won't get into the stinky, sweaty, shaky, ugly, scary nightmare that was for 5 or 6 days each time.  Nothing could stop me, the law, the hospitals, the rehabs, my friends or my family.  Death was all that was left in the bottle.  Then one day it just stopped.  After twenty something years, I was sick of dying and being a loser.  It's been over two years now and still every once in a while I wish I could drink like normal people.  Here's a great song by a great band covered by another great band. MDC - Live

MDCflyerI always dug MDC, going back to the early to mid 80's when I got one of their 7"s.  Getting to play with them in Humboldt was a blast.  I guess one of those times was about 1990 with WD40, which is where the flyer is from and I think Garden Weasel played with them a year or so later.  At some point I will need to do a write up on Night Train Productions and all the characters involved there, because if it hadn't of been for them we wouldn't have had so many great shows.  Humboldt turned out to be a great stopping point between the bay area and Portland.  Anyway I have had this tape since about 86, so I'm sure this was recorded before then especially when you consider the songs in this set.  Pretty decent quality for a live bootleg.  I really liked this recording and I hope you do too.  At least give the first track a listen so you can hear Dave MDC rant and rave.

Sopa De La Ropa

Sopa de la RopaWas going to do a Brent's TV post to go with the whole Humboldt thing but it can be very time consuming to do the editing and whatnot of a cassette, to put it on the computer.  Instead how about a nice easy CD, hell those just rip themselves.  We used to call bands like Brent's TV and Sopa De La Ropa "art fag" bands.  Not the most PC or flattering term, for what amounts to pretty fucking good music (in the case of both bands). I still have some guilt over the fact that I was so judgmental, but I always loved the music and supported the bands.  Ryan, was a good buddy of mine in the band, that's how I got the CD. I really liked Ryan, very talented, all around nice guy, hope he is somewhere out there happy and successful. Was secretly sweet on his Sister, Sarah, extremely cool, beautiful lady, but that has been the theme since I was a kid, being sweet on my friends' Sisters...hahaha. Anyway, I partied with these guys on a few occasions, but I don't remember if I saw them live, the late 90s are little hazy.  Somewhere in the back of my mind I think I did see them, but that may have just been listening to Ryan jam tunes on his guitar.  Before uploading this to the tube, did some checking to see if these tunes were available anywhere, but absolutely nothing on a google search...nothing on discogs too, which doesn't surprise me, this thing is way underground.  My favorite tune is "Girlfriend" which is at the 10:25 mark...

Positive Vibrations

After that last hardcore post I need to do something a bit mellower, so another reggae one it is.  Nothing too fancy here just some old stuff I got off the Positive Vibrations comp.  I guess these are remastered from the originals.  I picked out my favorites but definitely check out the Ethiopians and Barrington Levy (who will be featured in future posts).  These tunes remind me off stuff that Gage used to have in a boxed set that I think was Trojan stuff.  60's reggae, I'm sure there's a name for that like dancehall or something.  I hope you like a tune or two.

EDIT: Tunes deleted for fear of copyright police...they were good ones too!

Ratos De Porao

Match turned me onto this band after he came back from Brasil.  Correct me if I'm wrong Match, but didn't you ask around about punk music down there and someone told you about RDP?  This is not the recording you had, I can't seem to find that tape (see below, I did find it).  This one has a bit of a metal polished edge to it but it still rips.  I found this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSQyPCrOrTQ&feature=related on youtube but there are more.    Check out their myspace, http://www.myspace.com/ratos.  This is a whole different band from the one Match turned me onto.  I still dig them because I like the songs themselves.  Well I hope you like a song or two. Morer [Dying in the Forest] Caos [Chaos Mix] Guerra Desumana [Inhuman War] Agressão-Repressão [Aggression-Repression] Obrigando a Obedecer [Forcing to Obey] Asas de Vingança [Flags of Vengence] Que Vergonha! I went to the Alternative Tentacles website to see if this was in print but couldn't find it but they do have a ton of mp3s or you can buy another cd for $16.  Check it out:

http://www.alternativetentacles.com/search.php?search_type=merch&search_artist_id=113&sd=V-IiRS1xwqvo3iH1anf This is sort of an edit to the original post, but after some serious searching, because as you know it all depends on your choice of words when you do a Google or Yahoo search.  Match I found the original punk album Crucificados Pelo Sistema here, http://lagrimapsicodelica.blogspot.com/2006/02/ratos-de-poro.html , But I went ahead and coverted it from RAR to MP3.  These guys ripped and were better than the above re-recording. One Man Running - Demo

Looking over the Dead Ed blog in my links, I saw how many times Ed mentioned and appreciated One Man Running.  If you're reading this Ed, send me the sound board you have of them from the Beer Gardens so I can post it.  I'm with Ed, I really got into this band.  We played with them at so many shows and parties that we got to know all their songs.  They like us were hard partners and I think that eventually led to their downfall (and my own several years later).  Still this band rocked and was definitely one of those bands from Humboldt County during that era that could have been successful.  Yeah they were a little poppy but they were still hardcore.  When you match them up agaist lame bands that are making millions like Green Day I kind of get angry.  On top of that Green Day, when we played with them were assholes, while OMR were about as cool as you can get.  They had a 7" out on Kirbdog Records that I will post once I get my turntable hooked up to the computer.  Anyway give them a listen and maybe you'll like a song or two. [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AH9OQJVANns&w=560&h=315]

Garden Weasel - Last Studio

omr2a How about another Garden Weasel post?  Am I being an ego freak by posting my own band?  Actually I thought the band itself ripped, they probably could have done better by another singer.  I have no memory because of too much drugs and drinking, so remembering lyrics was really tough.  My rythme sucks and I can't dance except to run around in circles, not that we were ever called upon to dance on stage.  Like I said though the band ripped and this last recording has some of my favorite songs that we ever did.  We continued to do the song Criminal in my next band Grout but I'll save that for another post.  As usual with a Garden Weasel post I must ask you to go check my links and click on Dead Ed.  He has a much better memory than I do and a better way with words.  Heres what he had to say about this recording,

"As with most of our recording sessions, things don't go exactly as planned or sound the way they should, but we hammer through our tunes. "Smerb" is a play on the words "Some Herb" (stoners til the end...at least until the end of the band). "Ant Hell" is a comparison of our society with an ant hill. "Air, Water,Food" was all you really needed to live. "Criminal" was a rumination about feeling guilty about life, even if you played it by the rules. And "Can't Find my Smokes" was just fucking hilarious - Steve often wrote the funniest songs in our catalog. The songs came out alright, but were definitely rushed and sloppy. Still, we worked hard and tried to make the best of our final hurrah. This would be the last day that the four of us would be in a room together."

Kind of a sad ending to a very fun band.  Anyone heard from Boner?  I worry about him every time I read or see something on the war.  Anyway Ed kindly passed this recording on to me and now it's in my library.  At least give Criminal and Smerb a listen.

Third Degree

The storm hit us pretty good but we did not lose power.  There is ice everywhere though and the boss told us not to bother coming in because everything is closed.

I thought I'd do a short post for Cosmo, my buddie Ed's son.  He is quite the musician from what I here and what I originally wanted to do was make him a mixed cd.  I suppose now though he can just come to this site and pick and choose what he likes.  I found Third Degree here http://www.selfmadegod.com/ .  Just a brutally fast grindcore band that I stumbled upon and liked this tune the best.  I hope you like. td1 Third Degree - Never Gonna Get Me

Soulfly

One last post before I go to bed.  It's raining out here right now and the temperature is is close to zero.  This usually makes lots of ice which leads to power outages, so if I don't post for a while it just means I am out of power stuck in my house.  Another thing that sucks is that my CO detector keeps going off which means I have to open a window to get some fresh air until I can get my furnace looked at.  We don't even run our furnace that hot because propane is so damn expensive.  You have to keep your jacket on at our house.

Anyway I wanted to post a song that I really like by a band that I know nothing about.  I don't have any other songs by them except this one off of a pretty lame Roadrunner Records sampler.  I don't really have a lot of experience with this new kind of metal but I really think you should give this song a listen.

Leaping Frog

Well I haven't done a reggae post yet so here is the better half of the Leaping Frog compilation on VP Records.  I don't know much about any of the artists except to say that each track is a sort of a different mix of the same basic track.  The artists themselves make each track different.  You'll have to give them a listen to hear what I mean.  Most of my friends don't like reggae but next to hardcore it is my favorite kind of music.  One person told me that there is balance to be found in the two.  I don't blame my friends really, because the wanna be hippies of Humboldt County kind of ruined that, but I know several of my friends joined me at a Reggae On The River or two down in Garberville.  Who was with me at the one reggae festival down in Berkeley when a cop took a giant 1/4 once bud away from Rob?  Whatever happened to him?  I have to credit Gage with turning me on to the genre with Yellowman.  I had a chance to see him not too much later down in Berkeley (1987?).  Probably in the top ten of concerts I've ever seen (I saw Siouxsie the next night and that was in my top ten too).  I'll have to post my Yellowman/Fathead stuff in the future.  Give these guys a listen and maybe you'll like a song or two.  My favorite on this one is Screeche Joe, the lyrics are definitely a Mustard Relic.

A.P.P.L.E.

AppleAlong the lines of my last post featuring a beautiful voice I give you A.P.P.L.E.'s Neither Victims Nor Executioners demo.  I want to say one of the most beautiful voices in punk rock but when you give them a listen they are really a folk band.  I got this after reading a review in Flipside or MRR back when I was into the peace punk thing.  Match and a few others might remember that when I had long hair before I shaved my head back in high school.  It's amazing how when we were busy expressing our individuality we spent so much time on appearances.  Today just like then it's just a pose.  Back then when I wasn't hanging out with my close friends from school I was driving out to the north end of the San Fernando valley, hanging out with anarchists and eating vegetarian food.  Very cool people, with great ideas, but posing too with dyed black hair and all black clothes.  I remember Ron from a band called Naturecore who was super cool... [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbvS2VXETMc&w=560&h=315]   Did I ever take anyone to Leonore's Vegetarian Mexican Food in North Hollywood?  Awesome food and I promise the roaches stay on the floor and never get into the food.  If I went back to LA it would be the first place I would go to eat, or maybe Numero Uno Pizza in Burbank.  Anyway back to Apple.  Give them a listen and maybe you'll like a song or two...

Cowboy Junkies

Match Sang meWell Match sent me this picture but I couldn't download the file full size.  I've been having some computer problems with a virus getting past my virus protection.  Major pain in the ass when you consider my limited computer skills.  Damn I was a geetered out looking mo fo in that picture, good thing I had those two handsome stoned looking individuals next to me.  I saw that Sang had some great comments so I thought I'd do a post for him.  He always had a knack for finding groups and listening to music with the most beautiful singers.  I don't necessarily mean pretty but with voices that were gifts from God.  You know when people find out that I was in bands they ask me what I did and I say sing.  Really I didn't sing I just screamed and I didn't even do that well.  Sang's musical taste has always been varied but it was those beautiful voices that I always remember.  Here's my favorite song by one of the bands he turned me onto, the Cowboy Junkies, doing Misguided Angel.  I know all you guys are misguided angels like myself so please give this song a listen.  Cowboy Junkies - Misguided Angel

Kittie

My buddie Gage had mentioned the Bad Brains, an all black band, as being better than 99% of hardcore bands.  I thought I'd do a short post on Kittie, an all female band, that was better than 99% of metal bands.  I got to see them in San Diego around 2000 or 2001 touring with their first album Spit.  I have their second album but it's not as good as the first.  We went with a pretty big crew of guys back when I was drunk just about every minute of every day.  Oh God I was a loser.  Anyway they played at some club in Mission Beach where there was no dancing allowed with some other new metal band that's kinda big now I think (I was pretty drunk).  The lead singer of this band was pretty dramatic with a bald head and coming out on stage to start the set with a straight jacket on.  They played my least favorite kind of metal which I call pop grindcore.  Now Kittie brought me out of my drunken stupor and really had me listening.  All female bands can be a novelty act but these are really solid musicians.  Give this song a listen and see what you think.  I'm not posting the whole album because I don't want to do that with stuff that is still in print.

Garden Weasel at the chicken coup studio 02/92

Lank I didn't have this recording until Ed sent them to me recently.  We were really starting to settle in as a band at this point and probably had forty or fifty songs we could play.  I wish you could have heard us do the "Stray Cat Strut" or " Stayin Alive" covers.  I loved this band and I think alot of other people dug us too.  Man we got to play some really fun shows too (gw2).  In Dead Ed's blog (see links), he talks about our practice pad in Manilla.

"We somehow secure a practice space at one of the most bizarre locations in the world: a row of chicken coops in the town of Manila. Now, Manila is not your ordinary town. Located on a sandy penninsula, not far from the disgustingly fragrant pulp mill on Humboldt bay, Manila was basically a sea-side trailer park with a few ramshackle houses thrown in for good measure. The chicken coops were located on a farm that was populated with a cast of characters that even John Waters couldn't have thought up. First off, directly over the farm house were the 10,000 volt power lines that carried power out to the gigantic pulp mills further up the road. We reasoned to ourselves that this was why all the adult children that lived there seemed a little...different. We're talking giant munchkin-land, here, people. The mother was a dead-ringer for the Egg Lady from Pink Flamingos. She never left her big chair in the living room and was surrounded by her large, egg-shaped adult children who seemed to be very slow in the head. Our favorite was Nick, who looked very much like the ogre from the HBO series 'Fraggle Rock'. Nick was always very curious about the bands playing in the chicken coops and would come and hang out with whoever was around. "

Steve and I used to take the Turk mobile, the Dodge that Dodge Or hitch hike to practice out there.  My favorite was hitch hiking because you really met some interest characters on the way to Manilla.  We used to go hang out at that place just to be there and go check out other bands practicing.  Anyway enough words.  I hope you dig a song or two

Geto Boys

Well Gage and Slam were talking about rap so I decided to do a short rap post.  I am not a big rap fan because of the talk about bitches, niggers, and money, but I do like the political stuff, ie. Public Enemy and Boogie Down Productions.  I dig the Beastie Boys except the first LP.  I remember everyone listening to that one at the evening high school hang out spot while I was cranking out the white noise in my bug.  Some good stories there about hanging out at the Tommy's parking lot.  I remember hanging out with Match, Deutsche, Ivan and Enok, and a host of others.  One night we almost got our asses kicked by 15 or 20 of Eric Castillos gang, can't remember which one that was or his gang name either, But Match was his neighbor so they spared us.  Match do remember that old guy that wanted to shoot us or Deutsche do remember getting shot at , at the Manson caves?  Good times, but back to the rap.  I've only seen two rap shows and that was Cypress Hill and the Beastie Boys.  I was into Cypress Hill because they were hardcore stoners like me at the time.  I saw them at HSU with I can't remember who (12 Gage, Steve?) and they sucked.  I think there was a big brawl or a mini riot that shut the show down.  Now the Beastie Boys I saw at the San Diego Sports Arena and they ripped.  I could still score the best Humboldt had to offer and I got my whole section so stoned some of them started to trip out.  Bad Brains opened up for them and they rocked too.  When the Beasties played with live instruments they really tore it up and proved they could be funky and do hardcore at the same time.

Bushwick BillAnyway this song by the Geto Boys or is it just Bushwick Bill (help me out Gage) is a good political song that still applies today with Bush number two.  This band was definitely about the bitches, niggers, and money but this song hits the spot.  I got it off of a mixed tape Gage made me back in college with SFM (which I already posted), Saint Vitus, One Man Running live on KHSU and the Geto Boys.  All it needed was the Ramones and the Stooges to make it a legit Gage mix.  Anyway give the song a listen and let me know what you think.  Do me a favor you all and wish or pray or whatever you do, that Boner comes home safe to his wife and two kids. Fuck A War

EDIT:  This is a very old post that for God knows what reason, someone visited today and when I went to see what they were seeing, the post was all jacked up...couldn't have that as these photos are pretty cool if you were one of my pals in Humboldt circa '91 or so... This is what I had to say in the original post, "I'm at work right now but I had a few requests for pictures that some of you will recognize.  Here's what I got on the work computer.  Don't forget to do some scanning and send me some pics too." dainslabeThis was my Brother Dave Slam and I, pretty sure it was up at our place in Kneeland. Some great times with him up there, fucking great friend. Anybody else get put in a chokehold by him when he was really drunk. I miss and tried to call him and email him, but like everybody these days, he's busy with his own life and reconnecting with me is not a priority. I have several people that I would like to reconnect with, some of those folks are in the pics that follow. Not because I'm being overly nostalgic (just a little bit), but these were good people, enough to call them friends at one time and you just can not surround yourself with too many good, quality people.  I have a few people that I am close to here in my self imposed isolation in NoWhere Kansas, but there's a hell of a lot of folks who have a fucked interpretation of Christianity (love is not a bad thing) and are rabidly far right to the point of blind fascism.  It's probably the same wherever you're at it just seems like around here the smallest minds have the biggest mouths and all that... groupMyself, Dave "the Mechanic" (don't remember his last name, but he was a helluva good pal and house mate at the Flesh House...taught me how to pop wheelies in a wheel chair), Jeong Sang Ho (awesome human being, lived with Sang in three different houses, couldn't have a closer long lost Brother) and then Dave Slam. This was at the dunes during the Kinetic Sculpture Race, beer and frisbees were a common theme that year... group3My Turks Plumbing truck in the driveway of the flesh house (I was changing the oil)...Jason Powers (still in touch via fucking FB), myself, Kathy Meuter (lost contact with her at the end of the last millennium, she told me to fuck off, which I do not fault her for as I was calling her at all hours of the night boohooing wasted off my ass saying all kinds of crazy shit...I hope she's dong well), Steve Bohner (still sporadically in touch with my old pal and fellow band mate, in fact the drummer of all three bands I played in...very happy for all his hard won success in life...as Spock would say, "live long and prosper), Dave Slam, (flesh house resident) Dave "the Mechanic", Shawn (another flesh house resident and another good friend lost to the winds of time, last I heard, maybe 20 years ago, he was married and had a successful high end landscaping business), and last but not least Kira the dog (Steve's)... sangMy bro Sang and good friend (and secret crush) Lori (who is married someplace back east from what I can glean of her tiny bit of fucking FB presence (on the campus of Humboldt State University, back when everybody fucken smoked... IM000921.JPGLiam and I at my Mom's house around Christmas time 2007...

Sherry's Flappin' Mams (SFM)

Brendon and PapaWell, I have gotten some good responses from my friends and I hope that keeps going on.  I was busy this weekend visiting my father in law who is dying of cancer.  As some of you may know I ran over and killed my dog a couple of weeks ago, so my life has that country song thing going.  On a good note I want to confirm that one of our old posse, Sang is now a father.  Brendon Shirakowa Jeong (I'm not positive that I spelled that middle name right but it is his wife's maiden name).  Brendon and Papa DaveIf you didn't know Slam Daveis also a dad to twin boysSlam’s Boys.  I can't remember their names right now, help me out Slam.  Ed recently became a father again too.

Alex recently sent me a pretty cool that photo, so I decided to post some music from SFM (Students From Marin).  I loved these guys and wish they would have lasted a bit longer.  I asked Gage to help me out and write something on the band.

"Formed out of booze and drug soaked boredom, Students From Marin began in 1990 (?) and played around Humboldt for just under a year. Dave Atlas on guitar was and is most likely still a little bitch. Sherri Frost, drums, was a sweet, local drunken drummer gal. Gage did the vocals and was a premature balding meth addicted pizza delivery man and bartender suffering from an identity crisis. Chuck agreed to play bass because he and Gage were drug buddies. Humboldt legend Marten Bradley was a part time member of SFM filling in on bass for a few shows and practices when Chuck wasn't around.  Sherri got married and moved to Seattle. Dave Atlas moved onto Frisco and then back to his hometown of San Diego. Chuck delivers beer in the Sacramento area and is married with a couple kids. Gage got off drugs and is now addicted to money and living in his native Los Angeles. Marten lives on a big ranch in Santa Cruz that his family has owned for 100 years and is very popular with the ladies in several Bay Area area codes. "
