Brujeria - Machetazos 7"

This one is about as offensive as they come and of course it was meant to be that way.  I guess it's a reflection of the world that we live in that can be brutally ugly itself.  It makes me think of this guy who had a response to one of my comments on the Good Bad site.  In response he asked me if this was Hands Across America.  It was good for a laugh on my part.  No this is not Hands Across America, this is ugly as it gets.  The music, the lyrics, the cover art itself, but that's good isn't it?  These guys really do it on this one in an all out kind of way.  Is there a statement they're trying to make, or is it just shock value?  It's like blowing yourself up to kill other people.  I could go on and on with philosophy and theories about the meaning of this 7" but I really don't know shit about shit anyway.  These guys would probably just laugh.  I'm just a burnt out softy.  Do you guys that know me believe that?  I worked with a guy in San Diego named Tino who had been attacked with a machete and survived.  He had scars all over the place including his face, missing fingers and was just plain lucky to have lived.  The guy who did it to him had just left him for dead.  Anyway you take this in and tell me what you think, at the very least you are in for some of the most brutal stuff this band has to offer...

Social Distortion - 1945

 I know this has probably been posted everywhere, but it is just too much of a classic not to post here.  I can remember listening to this all the time in the mid 80's.  Mostly the 1945 side but listening to it now, both sides are equally good.  Back then I just thought they were as punk as you could get in that LA, SoCal style.  At this time Hell Comes To Your House was the best comp out there (or so I thought).  This was before I ever saw the Another State Of Mind movie/documentary.  That movie was pretty interesting in it's own way but thinking about it now it reminds me just a little bit of all these stupid reality shows that are popular these days on TV.  I'm sorry but I just can't get into that crap.  Was it a Crass lyric that said, "we don't want your TV, we don't want your lies, we don't want to sit and stare at other peoples lives"?   Is it cool to quote Crass?  I'm not cool anyway, just wanted to know.  Just too dramatic in a soap opera way for me.  Anyway my buddy Kevin A. and I used to listen to this all the time and this may in fact be his 7".  If it's yours dude let me know and I'll send it back (sorry?).  Those were good times.  Listening to this now, these guys were really good and this really deserves to be a classic.  It's easy for people to say that something is a classic just because it is old.  The Pacer is a classic now too.  For those who don't know what a Pacer is, it was a car in the 70's that looked like an aquarium on wheels.  I put this in the hardcore category but is it hardcore?  I'm not so good with categories as you can tell so I will let others debate over that.  If you don't have this in your collection you should.  I know they are pretty played out and people these days can say they are punk just because they listen to this band, but oh well.  They are all over Youtube, but this was kind of cool, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqatGoyN69k .

Dead Horse - Peaceful Death And Pretty Flowers

I think it was my buddy Ron Kuka (RIP...fuck cancer) that turned me onto these guys back in the late 80s and fuck, when I first heard them, they were instantly my favorite metal band for a while.  They could rock you or get really brutal.  So much more than the genres that were floating around back then (heavy, thrash, speed, or black).  I have been trying to get the first full length by these guys for a long time after my bro Boner hit record instead of play on the tape I loaned him.  To this day I ask myself why I didn't break out the tabs on my cassettes.  Before you answer that for me, I will say it, stupidity (but that is youth).  This was their second full length (I think) and I got it off of Ebay for cheap. Was talking to Brian the other day and we joked about the tape incident. Internet Wanderings - Homage To The Other Blogs 2

First off I did a post a while ago and didn't get the answer I was looking for.  PLEASE tell me who this band is, http://mustard-relics.com/2008/02/22/mystery-live-band/ , if you have any idea.  If you're just looking to download music this may or may not be the post for you.  I do hope (I know I'm living in la-la-land) that wherever people go on music blogs they leave comments.  A ton of writting on this one. wanted to approach these sites in a little more detail, because there is so much good going on out there related to music and I think these guys deserve a ton of credit.  Every single site I have linked up, I like for one or more reasons.  I generally don't go looking for music on the web, I just wander from site to site letting each of them turn me on to what they think is postable at the moment.  These are only in alphabetical order. http://7inchcrust.blogspot.com/  Great palce to start if you like that whole Dischargy, Doomy, crusty music phenomena, which I do very much.  You get pretty much what the title of the blog implies.  Really cool guy here who has actually bothered to comment on mine once or twice.  What makes this site stand out is that he really does his research or just knows a lot.  He also has a very extended link list that reaches beyond the music and into the political.  Check this good live stuff, on his server.  Once again the title of the blog pretty much tells you what it is, but I think the content kind of leans towards 7" hardcore.  One of my favorites on the site, Lots of good music on the harder faster side, but what really makes it stand out is the writting.  There is nothing like a listening to good music that has some backround to it.  He linked me up Japanese hardcore is your thing, I know I dig it, then this is your site.  I need to start checking this one out in more depth and leave some comments.  You can't go wrong with even a metallic GISM bootleg live recording this is definately the site for you.  Links upon links of music.  Not much in the way of writting about each specific link but a good resource none the less.  He hadn't posted one of those ones that I learned a lot from before I started blogging.  I always liked the sites that had direct links to the music so you could sample a track or two before downloading the whole thing.  On top of that these storage sites sometimes delete files or links become unusable.  A lot of variety again here but this was one of my favorites even though I have the album, similar to mine in that he tells personal stories that tend to go with the music.  The punk and metal you get here is generally from the 1980's east and west coast American stuff, but is by no means limited to that.  I got worried there for a while because he hadn't posted anything but has since then come back strong.  A really good example, That's it for the music blogs and if you made it all the way through my rantings then you should definately comment.  For one reason or another I feel like every one of these blogs has something to offer you.  I didn't really have anything bad to say about any of these sites because they have all done something positive for me and I appreciate every one of them.  I would much rather save my negativity for big business and government.  One last thing I wanted to mention is that many of these blogs are done in English by people whose native tongue isn't English.  I am really impressed by that and wonder how many Americans do blogs in Spanish, German, Swedish, etc.

Brujeria - El Patron 7"

   I got good responses here from my last Brujeria post, so I thought I would do another one.  Actually I would have done this one even if I did not get a good response from this band.  The responses were more of a philosophical and religious discussion, but some of the best feedback I've had on here.  I learned a lot from people like Fernando and the Pope, and even some of my old bros chimed in too.  Thanx guys.  This one is not their fastest stuff but it is soooooo heavyyyyy, especially El Patron.  This is one of my favorite recordings by these guys and as I said El Patron is just such a good song.  The lyrics really say a lot about culture in general.  I have another good 7" to post from them, which is still really heavy but has a lot of speed going on too.  As you can tell from the randomness of my posts, I don't strictly like fast and heavy, but it definately has a substancial spot here at MR.  Take these guys seriously or not as far as their lyrics, you have to admit this is musically far above average for the genre.  Enough of my blabber and on to the music.  Tell me what you think, okay? GO! - Root Canal flexi

  Not too much to say on this one, just good old hardcore after hardcore supposedly died.  I remember my bro Bohner and I got into this stuff around 1990 or so.  It must have been the result of something we heard up at KHSU.  Maybe he can clarify that for me.  Bohner was a guy coming from a metal backround and liked punk, while I was a punk guy who liked metal.  I liked this stuff from the get go and they really had some good stuff to say.  I found out later that at least the singer was one of the few openly gay hardcore guys out there.  Pretty good company when you consider guys like Gary of the Dicks and Dave of MDC.  I don't care what you think about homosexuality, but you have to admit that in a lot of places it takes a lot of balls to be openly gay.  I have a lot of respect for that.  Anyway the first song, King Of Nothing, is just a pretty ripping song and the rest of the flexi comes in second.  Two live recordings here, one on the radio and another at a club.  Let me know what you think. Slobber - S/T 7"

I have been gone to Kansas City for a few days and was trying to figure out my next post. This was something I already had ripped, zipped and ready to go. I got some great comments from my last post and I wanted to thank you guys for that. This is the first record put out by the awesome label, Deep Six Records , but I barely remember getting it.  I know that my friends from junior high that I've mentioned in several other posts, Bob and Ron were good friends with these guys, so I must have gotten it from one of them. Those two were my insiders into the extreme music of the late 80's early 90's. The back side of this thing is one of the most classic photo examples of 80's heshers in their prime. Every community had them and I was proud to call myself a hesher at one point in time. That's Ron (short, with the cane) and Bob (tall) on the the right end of this picture, with the band.   I went ahead and contacted Deep Six and tripped out when I got a reply and found out that my old buddy Bob still runs the label.  Man they have some really good power violence/grindcore stuff to be had there.  As I said this was the first thing put out by Deep Six Records.  These guys are basically grindcore in sound and to be honest they aren't really all that tight and are kind of amateurish (they call that "raw" nowadays) but I like the rough sound anyway.  Grindcore was just starting to become popular and I think they were riding that train.  They are definitely having fun here.  Pretty silly stuff lyric wise but I do like the song Malathion.  Growing up in Burbank they used to spray that stuff in the air all the time to kill the "Med Fly".  It would leave a funky smell in the air and a film that was hard to get off of your vehicle.  Maybe that's what's wrong with me and the guys I used to hang out with back then.  People might be living longer these days but with all the chemicals in the air, we sure get sick all the time.  It makes the medical and pharmaceutical industry happy and rich (that's your stock tip for the day).  Anyway give these guys a listen because I doubt there are many copies of this out there.  Let me know one way or another what you think... Splitting Headache On A Sunday Afternoon - comp. 7"

100th Post

It has been a long road to get here to the arbitrary 100th post.  Unless you are a rich person, a substantial music collection takes a long time to accumulate.  I guess these days, because of music blogs and P2P sites it doesn't take any money and relatively very little time.  As soon as I found out I could digitize my collection I wanted to do just that, if for any reason just to preserve the originals.  When I found out people were doing these music blogs, sharing music and ideas, I decided I wanted to do that as well.  It took SEVERAL hours to get where I am today at this site, but I figure there are many more hours in my future.  Considering my limited computer and technical skills I don't think I have done too bad of a job, even though there's plenty of room for improvement.  Not too bad for a guy who spent most of his adult life, drunk, high and digging ditches for a living (and of course fucking people over along the way). I hope that those of you that have visited and commented continue to do so in the future.  There are numerous people I would like to thank but rather than try to list those and run the risk of leaving someone out, I will just say thank you all.  You guys know who you are.  I would not like to thank those who just come to download and never leave a comment, but I would like to encourage them to comment wherever they go.  I don't care what language you write in, what you have to say, positive or negative, all comments are appreciated.  It's really all about the music and what it means to us.

I wanted to do something I think is pretty rare, has some history and just damn good music for this one.  This 7" was originally supposed to be called "To a Nation of Conflict Lovers" but I guess there were some problems with that.  I remember Ade, I've mentioned him a few times before, the drummer for the Satanic Malfunctions, was not really too happy about this.  He sent me this for free but I don't know how well this was distributed.  There were 500 copies made, you can get a decent copy at Discogs.  It's Loony Tunes Records' first release and as far as the Satanic Malfunctions and Active Minds it is some of their best stuff.  If you know these two bands, you should know what they are about and this is early raw stuff from both.  The Indian Dream and Radio Freedom tunes are pretty good but are much mellower and longer than the SM and AM ones.  If you know anything else, how to get a hold of of anything about the Looney Tunes label let me know.  I hope you enjoy this and thank you very much to those of you who visit this site regularly.

Generic - ...For A Free And Liberated South Africa

One of my favorite 7"s here and truly a classic in UK hardcore.  I don't remember the who, what, why, when, where of getting it, but I know I dug it from the very first play.  Every song is good in my opinion if just for the variety alone.  If you just like hardcore listen to the last three songs.  The lyrics on "The Oldest Trick In The Book" make it worth it.  This is the first release of Flat Earth Records, which also makes it noteworthy.  I usually go on and on here about the music or a story, but instead I'm going to let the music do the talking.  You must listen to this.

Nihilistics

I got a request from my bro Sang, so here it is.  This has been posted on better blogs than mine, probably with better sound quality, but I'm not going to turn down a request from someone who has been like a brother for over 20 years.  I met several people my first day at Humboldt State University and a few of those are friends to this day.  If I'm not mistaken several of us went to a supposed kegger at Clam beach that night.  It was Sang, Gage, Tony and Alex (from my highschool),  Ricky M., all in the back of Will H.'s truck.  Anyone else there?  There was no party though, it was just a hoax.  Day two, getting lost in the woods on acid with these same guys makes a better story. Anyway as I said, this has been posted elsewhere, the now defunct and thus legendary Good Bad Music.  GBM had studio quality rips, our loss.  The band has a website conveniently called, Nihilistics .  If you read the posts and the comments you will see that there are a lot of opinions on this band.  I don't know too much about all that but I would have to say that if you take this first 7" as a moment in time, it was a good one.  I got this from Ron Naturecore in the mid 80's for like $2.  He sold me a bunch of stuff that was rare even back then like the DYS Brotherhood 12".  I went ahead and posted my rip of this 7" because I was digitzing it anyway.  Maybe I'll sell it on Ebay when I need the cash. Remembering shit is sometimes hard for me to do, even stuff that happened 10 minutes ago. I don't know where or when I got this record, but I do remember liking it immediately.  I'm pretty sure I got it when it first came out at People's Record store in Arcata, CA.  For being in a small college town, that store really had a good selection of music.  They knew that you could get the popular stuff at the mall 7 miles away so they kept it pretty underground.  If they didn't have what you were looking for they would order it and were very familiar with the smallest of distributors.  Pretty good prices too.  The used section was nice because most of the idiotic college kids would buy a record because they thought it was "punk" and take it back to the record store because it wasn't that pop punk that was popular at the time.  I think it was that way at a lot of smaller used record stores back in the late 80's when "punk" was really becoming mainstream.

When this record came out the straightedge scene was getting pretty out of hand.  It had become trendy to be straightedge and a lot of bands and cities were taking it to fascist extremes.  During this time I was a beer guzzling, drug using fool but that didn't mean I didn't respect what straightedge was originally about.  Now that I'm clean (do cigarettes and coffee count?) I could care less if you're clean, straight or whatever, I just know I was a slave and wanted to be dead.  Grudge was a response to what was going on.  They were idiotic in a way but so was the scene they were responding to.  I love the use of satire when approaching certain issues and these guys really had that going on.  That was a pretty popular way of talking about issues in the punk scene, kind of made famous by the Dead Kennedys.  What takes Grudge another step forward is that they play some pretty sick hardcore.  The first song Drinking's Great is probably my favorite, but give these a listen and see what you think...

Impulse Manslaughter - Burn One Naked, And Nuke It 7"

   I had totally forgotten I had this one, but not too long ago  Jason at http://loresviscera.blogspot.com/  did a post on these guys.  This post is for him and a big thanx for all his help.  I couldn't have met him or tuned into his killer site if it hadn't have been for the Leftoverking. This is the first pressing of their first seven inch and to be honest with you I don't know much about these guys.  These guys look pretty young and even though they play really good hardcore, you can tell they aren't the musicians they would later become.  Check Jason's post to see what I mean, http://loresviscera.blogspot.com/2007/11/impulse-manslaughter.html .  They got more metallic but I think they got better too.  I think my favorite tune is Contradiction.  I really like this 7" and maybe you will too.  Let me know. Victims Family - Things I Hate To Admit

 I got this picture in an email and just had to include it in a post.  I don't care if you support any of  these Three Stooges (click on the thumbnail if you can't tell who they are), I am sorry but this is just like any other election.  Unfortunately, we have two parties to choose from and everytime all we have are people spouting the same bullshit over and over again.  I hold humanity and specifically the American people responsible for what goes on in this country (of course the creator of this blog and it's faithful readers are exempt from this statement).  Like robots they go to the polls and pick someone who supposedly is going to make our lives better.  I can't remember if it was Socrates, Plato or Aristotle who said that the person who is most fit to rule is the person who wants to the least.  Think about that as these idiots elbow each other like stooges to hop into the drivers seat.  Big business rules this country and it doesn't matter who you pick, they will just be puppets on a string.  I really could go on and on here but maybe you guys could make some comments on the subject.  I got this record from my bro Boner recently along with some other stuff I will post in the future.  Another bro of mine Bohner read that I was getting this and said he would take it if I didn't want it.  So I thought I would post it.  I never got into these guys way back when and I don't remember why except that I was probably more into the straight ahead stuff at the time.  They played in Humboldt, CA with No Means No but I can't remember seeing them (here's the flyer, vf2).  I guess that's the kind of style they play in is like No Means No or like Creedle (check that in my previous post.  Is it Jazz Punk?  Here's a live video of one of these tunes on youtube, http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=EfTrVVQyNU4 .  I had a hard time seperating the tracks on this one because some songs are seperated by less than a second and in one case I had to put two songs together.  How about some samples of this LP, the first three songs? Satanic Malfunctions - Who Wants The World

Lyrics1 Lyrics2  One of my favorite bands here for your consumption.  When I was about 16, when I got this, I thought I was pretty punk rock.  I hung out with the punks at school, hung out with the anarcho punks in the valley (Iconoclast, Naturcore, etc.), was a vegetarian and member of an animal liberation group, went to shows (I wish I had gone to a lot more), bought punk records whenever I could, was involved in a little bit of crime, and considered myself politically and socially aware.  I also corresponded with a few punks abroad.  I had started corresponding with Ade, the drummer of the Satanic Malfunctions after getting their demo tape because of a Flipside or MRR review.  I posted that demo on the site a while back if you care to look.  Ade and his band represented the best in the DIY punk scene in my opinion and I still feel that way today.  We traded tapes, shared ideas and I continued to get their music as it came out.  I was pretty happy when I got a thank you on this record even though today I really don't remember why.  I haven't seen this one posted anywhere even though I did find a couple here, http://www.7inchpunk.com/?s=satanic+malfunctions&submit=GO .  I have some more stuff I will be posting of theirs and Active Minds that I think are also pretty rare.  The cover on this is just about the best skeletal drawings I've ever seen.  If you like fast, abrasive, lo-fi, short songs you'll dig this... We The Living - Carnival Of Vice 7"

I've been wanting to do this one ever since I found out you could digitize vinyl.  This, in my opinion, is one of the best hardcore 7"s ever released.  I got it when it first came out in about 1985 at Vinyl Fetish in Hollywood.  I think they were playing this in the store and I decide I had to have it.  The first three songs are hardcore at it's finest, the fourth is a funky hardcore thing and the last is a Madonna cover.  I remember people I knew who were into Madonna were extremely annoyed.  It came with two photo copies one being this cheezy press release and the other a very interesting doodle.  Lyrically, these guys are at the least, silly and at the most filled with satire.  You make that call.  I actually sent a copy of this to Ade of the Satanic Malfunctions back then and he loved it.  Tell me you don't at least love the first two songs.

Important Note

 Well I finally did it and got the turntable running right.  After making sure the ground wire was properly hooked up, checking the help pages, reading user's guides and so on I finally just did a visual inspection.  The needle/stilus cartridge was not pushed all the way in.  BAM, 90% better sound instantly.  There is still the faintest of a hum or hiss, but I personally think it now sounds pretty damn good.  Let me know.

Iron Lung / Lana Dagales

As the weather becomes more and more hospitable I have found myself spending more time outside.  The spring is the best time of year around here, not freezing and not blazing.  Still working on the damn turntable to get that hum out that Ed was talking about.  I remember though that it took me a while to do cassette at least half way decent.  Back in the day I cared more about volume than quality of the sound.  I really am trying to do this right.  In the mean time how about another CD rip.

 At first I wanted to do Assuck (the best grindcore ever in my opinion), but I found out that was still available here, http://www.sound-pollution.com/ .  I may still do Anticapital/Blidspot later on because it is that good, but for sure will do some 7"s of theirs later on.  Then I thought about doing Iron Lung's "Life. Iron Lung. Death" but I found that here, http://www.625thrash.com/ .  I may still do that one too or at least part of it.  You can find that stuff any time you want on other sites anyway by doing a Google Blogsearch.  Now this one, the Iron Lung, Lana Dagales split is another great one but I couldn't find that you can buy it.  I may be wrong.  I checked the label here, www.boredomnoise.com but that site no longer exists.  I figured why not, this is too good not to post.  I know you can find this one no problem, maybe on some of the sites in my links, but I wanted to do it too.  I apologize if I am stepping on any toes here.  This is just too good for me not to post.  Iron Lung is guitars and drums, while Lana Dagales is bass and drums.  This stuff is like grindcore meets powerviolence meets pure musicianship.

Do not try to seperate the songs and listen to one at a time or just put a song or two on a disc.  You have to listen to the whole thing to get the effect.  Do not pay attention to my lame attempt to do attach song titles to the individual files because I got all the names in but there's still files left over.  Let me know what you think okay?

My Minds Mine - 48 Reasons To Leave This Planet

While I'm ironing out the kinks with my turntable, thanx for the advice Ed, I thought I'd do another CD post.  This is My Mind's Mine-48 Reasons To Leave This Planet, but keep in mind that if you really like this you should support the band and buy this here, http://www.selfmadegod.com/ .  Actually if you are into "extreme" music you should check that label and mailorder out, they have tons of good stuff.  I got this from the Darkest Hills store on Ebay which is a record store somewhere on the east coast.  I just got it under the category grindcore or power violence because I was just randomly looking for new stuff.   I picked this one out because I liked the band name, so if you're starting a band pick a good name.  It's got to be something that has some meaning or at least catchy to get my attention.  Anyway, I really dug these guys so check them out. VA - Behind The Redwood Curtain 7"

You know until I got the turntable I had completely forgotten about this record.  Four bands all from Humboldt.  I don't really remember Underhand or Couch but they may have just been getting started as I was getting out.  The other two bands, One Man Running and Grout (without me in the band, I left earlier that year) are two of my favorites from that time and place, I've already mentioned them in other posts.  Grout's recording of McKinleyville is the best I've ever heard, fast, but still has that country punk feel to it. EDIT: Uploaded this to youtube, as will be my habit now, 'specially with the old Humboldt punk-ish stuff.  Listening to this again, after Lil' Jimmy hooked me up with some old long lost gems (have the 7" but my rips are gone to cyber nowhere), I think this is a nice sampling of some of the bands happening in the first half of the 90's.  These here are also folks that were part of the scene at that time, in Arcata and Eureka band members were also show goers, supporting local and passing through type bands.  Bands were very supported each other pretty well, and as time passed bands would come and go, but the musicians were incestuous and would just end up playing with other people who had been in other bands.  Also listening to it again, I got to appreciate Underhand and Couch a bit more, very typical Humboldt vibe in two very different bands...
