Lungbrush - Old School New School

 I'd call it a writer's block if I was much of a writer, so I'll call it a brain freeze, that has left me at a loss for posting.  A busy 5 day weekend with the holiday and everything else that's going on, so maybe that's what's left me high and dry.  The wife and I were pretty short on funds so we kept our gifts fairly simple.  I got her one of those lotion, body spray gift packs while she got me this CD on ebay.  Been wanting to post something but of all the stuff I have uploaded and ready to go, there was nothing I felt like writting about.  Now I'm not really a "new" metal fan and I guess these guys might fall into that category, but I dig these guys.  They kind of remind me of the band Snot, which you can find here, http://mustard-relics.com/2008/01/09/snot-get-some/ and here, http://mustard-relics.com/2008/03/15/snot-alive/ in the sense that they are a rockin metal with a sort of a hardcore edge.  There's not too much out there on them which may make them a little more underground than most, but there was nothing I could find in the way of torrents or on the blogs.  They did do an album before this one on a small label called "Your Loss Your Cost", so if any of you Soulseek types wanted to help me out I would appreciate it.  As everyone seems to have nowadays, even broken up bands, there is a myspace here, http://www.myspace.com/lungbrush.  A little more mainstream than usual but I think you'll dig these two tunes.  If anyone's interested I'd be happy to upload the whole thing.  In case I don't do another post before the new year, I wanted to say that I hope 2008 was good for yall but that 2009 is 10 times better.  Later...

F.Y.P. - Extra Credit 7"

The wife and the grandkids before a little Christmas eve feasting.  Being the one taking the pictures, you rarely get to see my ugly mug, but that's okay because those are three beautiful little ladies and on these kinds of holidays I am all about mountains of food.  Made my world famous (the very small part I occupy) pea salad that Kim really digs, but in my insecurity I must have asked her 5 times if it was any good.  Tomorrow we work at the group home and have an even bigger feast there with about 20 people with disabilities coming over to gain some weight.  I don't know about you guys, but I'm already "thick" and this time of year I just get thicker. Christmas came early for me a few days ago when my old junior high school buddy and one of the most brutal drummers I've heard, Bob, sent me a big old box of music from his label, http://www.deepsixrecords.com/ .  All these are still in print so I'll probably just be posting bits and pieces, but if you like your music extreme in a hardcore or metal sense then you need to check out that site.  By sending me all that new music he reminded me of all the cool people I've come across in my almost 40 years of existence.  Friends both old and new have made this life a lot easier than it could have been and let me tell you, there have been times where things where definitely not easy.  I've made a lot of seriously shitty choices over the years but I've been pretty good about my choices in friends.  You guys have done right by me and I hope I've done right by you.  Dig the music. In my last post, two of my bros hinted at my hippyness, so on this one I wanted to leave no doubt as to where my passion lies in music.  This is my 67th post in the hardcore category, but it's one I've been wanting to post for a while.  This is the first release from Todd Congeliere's, Recess Records and also features him on guitars and vocals.  Todd also put out the only vinyl I've ever had the pleasure of appearing on, a Garden Weasel 7" and you can read more about Todd and how I know him there.  This E.P. may still be available, but my two attempts to contact Todd have turned up nothing.  At the very least this is an opportunity to sample some music and know that you can get a hell of a lot more of it from Recess.  Not only do they have over a hundred releases of their own, distribute for other labels, but they also have music priced in a way that makes it extremely accessible.  I have several more FYP releases, but this one represents them at their rawest.  No bullshit hardcore, the kind you would here coming out of a garage.  Give this a listen and know that if Todd gets back to me and sez it was uncool that I posted this, it will be gone.  So... 1. Tyrannosaurus Rex - Peel Sessions

Cold as a... (insert appropriate metaphor or simile here).  I know, not as cold as other places visitors may come from, but with the wind chill it is plenty cold enough for me.  Still staying in the old house until the 1st and we're limping along on barely any propane until tomorrow when the guy comes to fill up.  So although there is some relief coming in from the cold it seems like it is just to get out of the wind into a somewhat milder coldness.  Tough weekend all the way around, the stuff country songs are made of.  The power steering pump is leaking on my truck and the auto parts store wasn't open, the hoses and faucets were frozen so I had to use buckets to get the horses water and one of my dogs disappeared for 24 hours only to be found with another man in his truck.  Getting everything sorted out though, feeling like I need to spread the joy of music and wish everyone a good holiday.

 As you guys know I've been playing with other sources of music, so I thought I would check out something I had heard of, but never actually heard.  Expect these now and again.  Tyrannosaurus Rex or T. Rex as they came to be called were a total mystery to me and in fact I thought it refered to a person who played music and not a band.  If they're music has been played for me, I don't remember it, but I do remember being told they were influential.  Rather than go to one of my fellow bloggers for info and music, I decided to have a go of it alone, so I could do my own post.  I found something sufficiently rare and not officially released in a torrrent and then went to my usual reference here, http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=T.Rex_(band)&oldid=258506543 .  I'm not going to regurgitate all of that but I will say it was a very interesting article and by all accounts an important band.  The orignal duo were Marc Bolan and Steve Peregrin Took and you can find more stuff about them here, http://www.marcbolan.net/  and here, http://www.steve-took.co.uk/ .  Apparently the band was really popular on the John Peel show, which is where these recordings are from.  I'm not sure if Steve Took is on this recording as according to Wikipedia, "By 1969 there was a clear rift between the two halves of Tyrannosaurus Rex. Bolan and his girlfriend June Child (ex-girlfriend of Syd Barrett) were living a quiet life, while Took had fully embraced the anti-commercial/community spirited/drug-taking ethos of the UK Underground scene centred around Ladbroke Grove. Took was also attracted to the most anarchistic elements, such as Mick Farren/Deviants and members of the Pink Fairies Rock 'n' Roll and Drinking Club."  Took was replaced by Mickey Finn who some considered inferior to Took.  My first thoughts on T. Rex was they sound like a mix between Syd Barret and Tiny Tim, which to me is cool as I dig both those guys, especially Syd.  If you read the wikipedia article though, this was an early incarnation and the band moved on to bigger and better things.  Maybe I'll do a post on that later early glam stuff another time.  The way I got these files was as two big files without being seperated into tracks and with talking in between songs.  I went ahead and seperated, editted and labelled the songs, but after each set you can get them in their original form and at a higher bit rate.  This was kind of a fun process getting this to you so let me know what you think Set One 01/04/70

Melt Banana, The Hitch, Human Thurma, Hellworms - Live @ The Vista Eureka, Cali. 1998

My bro jeff had mentioned in the comments on my Melt Banana post that he had a bootleg of one of their shows up in Humboldt.  The recording not only included them but his anvil heavy old band, the Hitch, along with two other bands I never heard of.  I told him I was really interested in that and being the stud he always has been, he ripped it and got it to me right away.  Let me tell you, I was not disappointed.  This must have been one hell of a show because from beginning to end, every tune by every band shreds.   Jeff used to have this on his Multiply account but the link isn't any good anymore, so you get it like it was the first time.  I was going to make four posts out of the show, one for each band.  Listening to it though it just fit together so well as it was.  I didn't mess with the labeling too much even though I recognized a lot of the tunes, because I just wasn't too sure of myself.  I did a Melt Banana post not too long ago here, http://mustard-relics.com/2008/11/16/the-locust-melt-banana-split-7/ and this makes a great follow up to that.  I also did a Hitch post a while back here, http://mustard-relics.com/2008/06/21/the-hitch-2001-cdr/ , but this live shot is about three years earlier and represents a sound I really like even a little bit better in them.  I couldn't find out too much about Human Thurma except that members from the band went on to be in another band called Hex Machine.  From what I could tell the Hellworms are just a later incarnation of Victims Family.  All in all I would say this is one of my favorite bootlegs of all time.  The Vista where this show was recorded, I think was having shows back when I was up there in the early 90's, as I think we (I can't remember which band) played there.  Kind of a neat little restaurant right on the Humboldt bay.  It seems like since that time they have become a hot spot for live music.  Anyway, give this a listen and tell me what you think. Acid Pigs / Short Fuse 7" split

  Not much to say tonight (maybe that's for the best), a little burnt and waiting for the DVD burner to make the movie for tonight.  This one is for Match.  I don't remember where or when I got this one, but I do remember getting home and realizing there were two copies in one sleeve.  Don't really know too much about this one and since it wasn't half bad I decided to do a little research.  This was the second release from Donut Crew Records with the first being the Colorado Crew 7" comp. that also featured both these bands.  I don't know anything about the Colorado scene, but in the comments on this release, http://www.7inchpunk.com/?p=300 , you get a little first hand info.   Bob Rob Medina who was in Short Fuse and ran Donut Crew has kind of a cool site here, http://homepage.mac.com/mrbob770/PhotoAlbum29.html .  He does some pretty cool art.  Anyway about the music, nothing real fancy here, just some straightfoward hardcore, so give it a listen Acid Pigs Salvation Or Sin Crowley Beer’s Gone Bullshit King Short Fuse Hidden Inside Learn Doubt

Iron Maiden - Live+One

 Doesn't it just look cold out.  10 degrees (-22 celsius) but with the wind blowing it sure feels a lot colder.  Got some chores to do out there in a little while, so I'm trying to soak up a little warmth first.  Kim and I are still slowly moving, taking a couple of truck loads a week and will be living in the new place on the new year.  Very busy fun day yesterday with a truck load out to the new house, our bi-monthly trip to the small city 60 miles away for fancy coffee drinks, Christmas shopping, the cheap cigarette store, chinese buffet, a family visit and finally coming home and enjoying the Friday the 13th parts 1&2 DVD we just got.  Too busy to rip vinyl right now and what I do have ripped isn't screaming at me as needing to be posted so... You know it's not like I don't have enough vinyl of my own to post, but now I'm doing the bt thing and getting into stuff I would have never gotten into before.  Kim and I get about half of our movies shared through torrents, the other half being found in the used, previously viewed and bargin bins.  Now I'm exploring the musical side of the bit torrent thing, in addition to what I find from the blogsearch function and my fellow music bloggers.  I know I really should be buying stuff to add to my actual physical collection but if you knew what some of this stuff was going for these days you would understand my problem with being able to afford it.  I do have some things coming in the mail that I hoped to post and actually just got a BIG box from my old buddy Bob at http://www.deepsixrecords.com/ but expect some of these bit torrent finds as well, because my musical curiosity is bigger than my bank account.   I had made a comment on another blog about the fact that I didn't think Iron Maiden had found a good replacement for Paul Di'Anno in Bruce Dickenson and wanted to explore that concept a little bit.  Basically anyone can do that for themselves by going to, http://blogsearch.google.com/blogsearch?hl=en downloading Iron Maiden's S/T or Killers and comparing them to any other Iron Maiden lp out there.  My memory of the band always goes back to listening to Number Of The Beast while going 140 or 150 mph down the road in some guys 280Z or was it a 260, with Kevin Amos and I in the back seat.  Back in 1983 the speed limit on interstate 5 was 55 mph and those cars driving 55 looked like they were stopped.  So Dickenson has made an impression on me and Dickenson has an incredible voice but so does Steve Perry of Journey and that's just not what I'm looking for in a band.  With that said I do have a sweet spot for the album Number Of The Beast.  To put it simply though, (cuz you know that's what I'm all about) I like the rough quality Di'Anno had better.  You pretty much get a summary of the band at my usual source here, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_maiden_(band).  I decided to explore Di'Anno a little but more and found the Live + One in a torrent.  At least to my ears, this was the sound I liked from Maiden.  I'm not a NWOBHM expert and only this year found out that it meant, New Wave Of British Heavy Metal.  As far as I can tell the only bands from that genre that I have really dug on in my long past were Motorhead and Venom, so checking out this early Iron Maiden stuff was kind of a pleasure.  Read about Live + One here, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live!!_%2Bone and then go ahead and give it a listen here,

Blister - Stitches

Just a short one for you guys tonight, kinda busy with work and moving, plus it's pretty dead around here.  I think I talk too much and I'm a little too eclectic with the music.

 Another one of those records that I didn't appreciate when I first got it.  Listening to it again though made it rip worthy and definitely diggable.  I can't remember what it was that I didn't like about it, because me feeling now is that it shreds.  I put it in the Jazz Punk category where it seems to fit nicely, but there is a little bit of a hardcore vibe going on.  Looking around there are several bands with this name but there was very little to be found on this particular one.  I do know they also have a song on the Collective Conscience 7" comp put out by Broken Rekids, which I have and will have to post sometime.  I did find out that Noah Landis of Christ On Parade and Neurosis was in the band, and you can hear that in their sound, but really that's about it.  I'd love to know if there was more from these guys somewhere, but for now just dig these two. Before thoughts start running through your heads, I need to say that I am NOT a Van Halen fan.  In fact if I was to start a list of rock stars that I hate, David Lee Roth would be a good starting point.  Not to put you down at all if you are a fan, in fact I make a conscious effort NOT to put anyone down for their musical taste.  Damn, if you are a music lover of any kind, you have something good going for you.  I can not stress that enough.  I think I've mentioned it before, that when I was a kid living in a shitty part of L.A. during the late 70's there were two brothers who were friends of mine living in the apartment downstairs.  One was a big time Led Zeppelin fan and the other had picked out Van Halen as his favorite.  They used to fight over who was a better guitar player, Jimmy Page or Eddie Van Halen.  I'm not much of an expert on that but what I would always say was that Jimi Hendrix was better than both.  Now one of the tunes I have for you here is the only tune that I really like by Van Halen, Atomic Punk.  There's something about the tune going way back to those childhood years that made it a standout among the various rock tunes being played back then.  Maybe kind of stupid if I really stopped to think about it but I try not to do that too much.  It popped in my head recently when I heard it on the classic rock radio station that I've talked about the old lady and I listening to around these parts.  KFIX, "the Fix".  They play too much Van Halen in my opinion, which brings me to the other tune I've included for you.  They play the song Eruption followed, as it is on the album, by the Kinks' You Really Got Me all the time.  Now the song Eruption brings back memories for me too.  When I moved to Burbank in 81' we lived across the street from this stoner park, Monterrey, that I've mentioned before.  There was this guy who was constantly on acid or something equally mind altering that would bring his Pig Nose amp along with a guitar and would rock out tunes all the time.  His favorite thing to play apparently was Eruption.  Maybe you guys have memories attatched to those songs as well (or not).  Here they are.  Just for fun I wanted to see if I could find live versions of the tunes for you.  Just goes to show you can find just about anything these days on the internet.  I found the Atomic Punks Bootleg here, http://vivalesbootlegs.blogspot.com/ , which has mostly mainstream stuff, but is a pretty good resource for bootlegs.  Funny thing is that the S/T Van Halen album was released in 1978 and this bootleg was from 1977.  Maybe not funny at all, but here's those live versions for you. Barking Dogma

Another one of Kevyn Dymond's many bands for you here.  Shit I wish I could remember some more of his bands for you, but I did do a post on my favorite one, Drilling For Mom, a while back.  Barking Dogma has the Frank Zappa thing going on, which is interesting because Kevyn looked like Zappa in a wheel chair.  Zappa and Dogma are cool but I think they are more for those musicians out there.  I just don't have the musical backround to appreciate this stuff fully and I've long felt that was one of my (many) short commings.  I did play clarinet and saxophone but never really had the talent to get good.  I even tried to play drums in one band (just cymbal and snare), but I'm just not musically coordinated.  Now ping pong and video games are where my coordination's at, but I don't see how watching me do that would be entertaining to you.  Anyway, about Barking Dogma, it looks like you can get this whole cd here, but I already ripped it so you get it from me too.  There's an interesting article Kevyn wrote on underground cassettes for the Ebook, Cassette Mythos, here.  As I said Kevyn was in LOTS of bands and I actually found a cool site with one of his bands, Girth, posted here, here and another one here, here.  Now Kevyn Dymond was a big part of the scene up in Arcata as far as I remember and for all I know he may still be.  Maybe some of my bros that still live out there can comment in more detail about him.  This is not my favorite of his bands but you might find it good anyway.  All that's left is for you to groove to some Barking Dogma, so do it if you like. Cringer - Zen Flesh, Zen Bones

Not much to say, tonight, things are kinda quiet.  Kim and I are slowly moving into our new farmhouse and looking forward to what all that means.  A little bit of snow again today which was nice and actually around here as long as the wind isn't blowing, I don't mind the cold.  We do hot chocolate and a movie every night which is a nice relaxing routine.  I hope that life for everyone who has bothered to read this is going well and yall have moments of goodness.  That was my sappy way of saying I hope you guys are all doing alright.  Been digging the comments lately even though my old bros have been kind of scarce.  The only two kinds of people who comment here are old friends, and new ones who tend to be other bloggers.  Thanx guys and because life is going well for me it made me think that I want you guys to be getting your piece of the pie as well.  About the only thing I can do for you from all these miles away is provide you with my thoughts and a little bit of music.

 One of the many "interesting" (there's got to be a better word to describe it) things about doing this blog is that I end up learning a little bit more about these records that I've had for a while.  This was not my favorite 7" when I first got it, but listening to it again I kind of liked it.  Kind of that pop punk thing going on that usually isn't what I listen to, but sometimes it's okay.  I know I should remember something about them, like I have the feeling that someone I knew had a brother in this band and that's why I got this, but I can't put my finger on it.  As is sometimes the case, these guys, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cringer_(band) don't have much to say but they do have a few links, including this one, http://www.myspace.com/cringerhbr .  One of the founders of the band, singer and guitar player, Lance Hahn died pretty young in 2007, you can read about him here, http://www.punkbands.com/news/13264/ .  They had several releases on Vinyl Communications, including this one, but they also had one on Lookout.  As I said, kind of the pop punk thing going on, but there is an anarcho feeling in it too.  Let me know. Nuisance - Attractive Nuisance demo

   Another one of those posts just for the Humboldt of it because I'm not really that excited by the band.  They are very good, I think, for the style they play, but it's not one of the many styles that grabs me.  I only saw these guys once that I remember and that was in 1987, the first year I was up there.  They played in the common room on the first floor of the Sunset dorm.  I remember liking them which was why I got this tape, but I was pretty high and drunk at the time (and maybe dosed as well).  The singer guitar player was a really nice guy and seemed like he was the meat and potaoes of the band.  I don't think they were around too much longer and ended up moving to the bay area.  They released stuff on Kirbdog Records, Very Small Records and Lookout Records from what I can tell.
