Ill Repute - Oxnard Land Of No Toilets

I wanted to write something humorous today but I'm just not feeling it.  Instead here's a shot of the storm last night. Erich over at GBM had sent me over Peter's KBD to give a listen to what he had called the best hardcore 7", the Urban Waste self titled.  I was game for that because I hadn't heard of that and any new (to me) hardcore is worth checking out.  Unfortunately the links were dead because the single had been re-released, but it did get me to thinking.  Of course the best of anything is usually subjective, but what about a category of just really good hardcore.  This 7" definitely fits into that and I would certainly call it one of the best.  I did see this posted at the Old School site a long time ago,  http://oldxschool.blogspot.com/search/label/Ill%20Repute , where you can also get some of their demos.  Awesome stuff but I wanted to post it too.  When I was in high school, my buddy Norm was friends with Tony in IR, but I never did go to see them.  Funny how we would drive an hour and a half to go drink beer on the rocks in Seal Beach but we wouldn't make the drive to go see as many shows as we should have.  I got this around the time it came out in 1983 and it quickly found it's way to a mixed tape, that I could take with me wherever I went.  I've talked about the stereo in first car and how the treble was insane in that thing.  Zero bass and sitting in the back your ears would ring if you sat back there too long.  Now this Ill Repute is a super trebly kind of thing and listening to it reminded me of cranking the tunes in that car.  I made sure to record this as is so you would get the full effect.  In my opinion every tune on here is awesome, but if I had to pick one it would be Sleepwalking.  There may be something wrong with your taste if you don't think this is at least a really good hardcore record.  Who knows though because if you pay attention around here, I have some pretty whacked out taste.  Enjoy. Raped Teenagers flexi

  This is a good follow up to the Meat Puppets post, I think.  I must have went through an Ax/ction Records phaze because I'm noticing that I have several from that particular mailorder/distribution.  This one was released in 1988 and from what it says was released just prior to an album as a sort of sampler.  I assume that these songs are on that album called I Krartans Klor.  I really dug it back then but I don't think I fully appreciated it the way I do now.  I ended up putting it in the Jazz Punk category but that's a pretty tough call.  Post hardcore?  I don't know.  I need a category called trippy tight hard stuff.  I can't go on too much about how good this band is because one of my favorite bloggers, http://www.kbdrecords.com/ , Peter, was the drummer from this band.  Ripping drummer by the way and just a rockin band in general.  My Swedish is a bit rusty but I think they are fortelling the eventual rise of the Mustard Relics blog.  Give this a listen and tell me what you think because this was not your run of the mill band, there was definately something different about them. Meat Puppets - S/T 7"

Well Mustard Relics has been running super slow lately and I apologize for that.  Please don't let that stop you from occassionally stopping by for a visit to my "cafe" (as my friend Fernando would say).  Apparently the server I am on with my host is not working properly and they are in the process of transferring data to another server.  I also found out that there is nothing I can do about my 7mb limit on individual file uploads, so I will unfortunately have to use external storage sites sometimes.  Anyway I could continue on with this boring topic but I'd rather get to the music.

   I was fortunate enough to see these guys in the late 80's at the Kate Bucannon at Humboldt State University.  Incredible in the same way No Means No and Jesus Lizard were.  Do any of you old Humboldt guys remember that show?  I wish you guys would help me out with some stories here because it helps me to remember too.  The only stuff I had of these guys was this first 7", so I was screaming out names to these tunes.  They didn't play any.  Incredible musicians to say the least.  I had a tough time putting these guys in a category because they are really all over the place in their sound.  For lack of a better place I went ahead and put them in jazz punk category, although hardcore came to mind too.  Let me know what you think, because I actually don't care, I really just use them for your benefit and to give my disorganization the appearance of being organized.  You really either like a song or you don't.  It either means something or it doesn't.  As you can tell, there is a lot of variety around here as far as what means something to me and what I like.  Listening to this again was cool in more ways than one way.  My copy, since I got it in the early 80's from Vinyl Fetish in Hollywood, has always had a couple of spots of what I thought was wax on them.  I didn't know how to remove that without ruining the rest of the record so I never could really listen to two of the songs on here because of that.  It must have been jelly donut or something though because before I ripped it I hit it with some rubbing alcohol and a q-tip and it came right off.  So you are getting to hear this the way I did for the first time, complete.  When I went to KFTH to get some backround they didn't have much more than a discography, but they did have this awesome link to an awesome collection of live recordings, http://www.wohlers.org/puppets/ .  Flex had this to say, "Extreme and hectic hardcore, totally frantic and raging beat, then again weird guitar noise. Highly original... a classic".   I could regurgitate some other info on these guys, but you can look that stuff up if you're really that interested.  Suffice it to say that this 1981 release still sounds good today.  You tell me. Assuck - Anticapital / Blindspot / +3

You really should own your own copy of this and they sell this and a lot of other good stuff for cheap.  I thought I could go ahead and post this (at least temporarily) for two reasons.  First, this is definitely in my top ten all time and just for posterity I have to post those.  Second, you can find this on several blogs using the Google Blog Search function, so this is not the first or last time this will be posted.  I will just post the tracks individually and not give an easy link to the whole thing.  Of course if anyone has a problem with me posting it let me know and please don't hold it against me.  If you are unfamiliar with these guys, the music pretty much speaks for itself.  Super fast, tight grindcore.  These guys did to grindcore, what Infest did to power violence, in my opinion.  The best of the best in their genres.  In the futre I will post the Necrosalvation 7" as well.  Let me know what you think. Germs - Live At The Whisky 06/77 LP

You know sometimes I have a hard time deciding on the post both in terms of the words and the music.  I suppose a lot of people go through that so I can't blame that on brain damage, unless we're all brain damaged.  I work with people with disabilities and have come to the conclusion that it's not just them that have been diagnosed but all of us that are disabled.  Emotional, developmental, psychological, physical, take your pick of one or several we are all short of the mark.  I don't know what that mark is, call it "normal", but everyone has some kind of issue to deal with.  Like looking through cracked glasses we have to make sense of what we see and do the best to get by.  I read the other blogs and am always impressed by the music, opinions, views and history that are expressed.

This was one of those ones that, because I run a mostly punk/hadcore kind of site, I felt it was mandatory to post.  It's probably been posted all over the place and/or re-released but bear with me and know that it is here again.  I got this from my old buddy Alexander Wallace IV from my elementary school in about 1981.  He was a blossoming musician at the time and was into punk just because it was a different kind of music, not because of it's musicianship (I will post the jazz fusion stuff he was really into sometime).  He gave it to me because it was just too sloppy even as a jam sort of thing.  When I think about it now it was sloppy music made by sloppy people.  I too was very sloppy as a person at one time, for a long time and always dug this recording.  In a way I still do dig it.  In 1977, this was punk rock.  I haven't forgotten that emotion and energy.  As a person that can look back and reflect I wonder about the appeal of being so strung out on dope and liquor.  There is no better way to describe except fucked up.  I don't mean just on that occasion but in general.  Redefining what it means to be a human being or least finding out what the human being is capable of.  Self destruction as an artform and a way of life.

Just a couple of notes on this one.  I separated out Forming into two tracks because half of it serves as a sort of intro, there are really only ten tracks on this LP.  I like the intro because of the Rodney Biggenheimer and Belinda Carlisle parts, so I decided to separate that.  Some of these songs go on and on so they ended up being big files, too big to post at 320kbs.  If you care about the sound quality though see below.  Anyway enjoy this piece of history or shit depending on your point of view.

We Can Do Whatever We Want - Comp. LP

     One of the drawbacks of living in the country is crop dusters.  It's kind of neat to see them flying because it's like a stunt plane doing sharp turns and low flying.  On the other hand it sucks when they're flying in the fields around your house spewing out some kind of chemical.  It puts you on edge and leaves you wondering if that sore throat and headache are just your imagination.  Reminds me too of the paranoia when planes and helicopters fly low in Humboldt County looking for illegal crops.  Everyone around here dies of cancer sooner or later and people are worried about tobacco.  Another BCT thing for you here, this time a sampler LP with stuff from several of their (his) tapes.  J, over at http://loresviscera.blogspot.com/ had mentioned in a previous post that his BCT stuff must have burned up in his Coup de Ville a while back, so I thought I would throw another one his way.  You need to check his site out right now because he is posting some pretty insane new and old stuff.  Check out the Iron Lung and tell him MR sent you.  I have another BCT tape "The Last White Christmas I" but I saw it posted somewhere else plus if you check here, http://www.geocities.com/chrisbct77/ , he says that all his tapes are still available.  If you're a digital freak look around I'm sure you can find it, it's well worth it.  This one, as far as I'm concerned, is a great sampler and any sampler with Raw Power on it is good.  One of the best hardcore bands ever as far as I'm concerned.  I was just going to post the tracks I liked but instead I posted everything so I won't have to use an external storage service.  There's lots of good stuff on here especially if you're into that noisy Italian stuff.  Some other stand outs for me were Psycho, Violation and Detention.  Give it a listen and let me know what you think. Doug E Fresh

 I was looking through my recent posts and noticed that I haven't posted something besides metal and hardcore in some time , so I thought I would do something different (that everyone will hate).  Call it an obstacle for those who just surf on through for downlaods or call it motivation for those who have been dying to leave a negative comment.  I listened to this again while ripping it and it still left me with a smile.  This was released in 1985 I think and was not even close to what I was listening to at the time.  It was popular music back then and actually when you think of the Human Beatbox Doug E Fresh, this is historical as well.  I always took the hard classes in high school so I had some nerdy friends too (we called them 4.0's as in their grade point average) and I think they turned me onto this.  One thing it reminds me of for some reason is of getting busted for smoking pot on a Youth and Government trip to the state capital, Sacramento.  I didn't think it was funny at the time but I can remember the teachers asking me why I did it, while I was totally stoned.  My mom didn't think it was funny either.  She always taught me that if you were going to do something bad don't get caught for it.  I failed in that mission.  Anyway this is Doug E Fresh and MC Rikki D with their biggest "hits" from a 12" I got for almost nothing dhortly after it was popular.  Give it a listen to get a taste of something a little humorous in it's 80's-ness and the story on La Di Da Di is funny as well. Sins Of The Flesh - Greed

  This is definately not to be confused with the goth band out of England around these days. Funny thing about these guys is that I really know nothing about them except what is wrapped up in this disk.  This was released in 1988 on a Santa Barabara label, StreetRecords, but they were from Sacramento.  I met the bass player, Kevin, up in Humboldt back in about 1990.  Kind of a hippy looking guy but was hardcore/metal to the bone.  A super left wing type of person involved with Earth First and similar groups, but I don't think that defined him.  Really cool to hang out with and I wish I was still in touch with him.  He really dug on Garden Weasel, so when we came out with a 7" I gave him a copy.  In trade he insisted on giving us 4 copies of this record.  Kevin had lots of tats and was working on becoming a tattoo artist himself.  He had already done the grapefruit thing that I guess tattoo artists do and had worked on himself quite a bit.  I figured I had several tattoos so I volunteered to be his first victim.  Every good artist has to start somewhere right and we can't all get work done from someone who is experienced or there would never be any new artist?  So the design I decided on was Chaos written in old english around my ankle with a little cartoon punk holding a bomb I got from Crass' You're Already Dead 7".  Not the most original punk idea but I liked it.  So we decided to get to it.  He did the usual thing and traced the design onto a transfer and then transfered it onto my skin.  He was pretty nervous and a little shaky which made me a little nervous.  I had made up my mind though that if it was a simple design and that if it didn't turn out well, it was not like it was something on my neck.  So he goes to do his first line, shaky handed and ends up doing it really crooked and very heavy handed.  We looked at it and decided that he need to do the transfer again so the crooked line would be covered up by fill on the letter A.  Anarchy baby.  So I think after some discussion and some relaxation, maybe even a joint, we got started again.  He wasn't so shaky this time but it was extremely painful because he was so heavy handed.  Instead of the gun sounding like a Japanese motorcycle like it should it sounded like a Harley that was misfiring.  Damn painful, which made me shake a little but I was determinded to be someones first tattoo and like I said Kevin was cooler than shit.  We got it done in what seemed like forever and it actually didn't turn out too bad.  The cartoon was a little screwy but I was not displeased.  If your out there Kevin, thanx man.  My camera sucks, in case you haven't noticed. Liberté? / A State Of Mind ‎– Don't Vote... Subvert! 7" flexi

 This picture is not from this release and they would probably object to it (sorry), but when I did a search for "punk clip art" this was one of the images that came up.  It made me smile for a number of reasons, can you think of any?  Anyway I can't remember if I got this flexi from Rene of the Iconoclast or Ron of Naturecore but it was a freebie.  Apparently Eva-Tone screwed these guys and censored this piece of plastic.

On a side note I called Eva-Tone not too long ago to see about doing a flexi and they said no one does them anymore.  They have the equipment but they can't get the materials.  Is that true?  Wouldn't it be cool to start putting out flexis again.  I know nobody would buy them but the record nerds would collect em.

EDIT: Decided to revisit this post, if for nothing else but to get the music as all my music files were deleted off my hard drive.  This post has some of the best comments, by some of the best minds that I also consider friends, but like so many of my earlier posts it is painfully bland.  So on top of cleaning out the dead links it contained I'm adding (someone else's) scans.  When the makers of this flexi did this thing they thought the images were important enough to include rather than just the naked flexi, so here they are.  On a side note, I am now one release short of having all the Mind Matter releases, 9 of them.

 

This is one of those censored copies, but it's pretty cool anyway.  It was put out by Mind Matter Records, a label that I will be posting more of in the future.  These guys were from San Francisco and were about as DIY as you could.  From records to tofu ice cream they did it all.  I'm bummed I never got the chance to meet them.  This stuff is your standard peace punk sound but each song is different from the next.  Kind of a later American Crass thing going on.  The 7'' I have by A State Of Mind is better so I will be posting that in the not too distant future.  This was kind of a protest against voting and is still relevant today (as it always will be).  The censored parts come in the form of beeping out the word "fuck" and on Don't Vote Part 2 there was supposed to be a speech along with it that said, "This year millions of people will once again go to the polls in the hopes of winning the right man for the title of president.  Every election year is the same, the promises of peace, a better economy, and of course the continuation of our freedom by participating in the electoral process.  We're led to believe that voting is our chance to have our say, that it's our freedom in action.  But as the elections close and the puppet won, the world continues it's path to utter destruction, peace is not obtained, the economy is falsified, and our freedom is totally denied.  Peace and freedom can not be won by the power of one individual who chooses to use that power to oppress us all.  This election year please don't vote...Subvert!" This has always been true and actually I would have taken it further and talked about what big business has to do with the whole process.  Maybe even throw something in about not trusting the masses in their greed and ignorance to make decisions for me.  man I could go on and on... Deadhorse - Horsecore: An Unrelated Story That's Time Consuming

I ran across a music blog the other day that had something like 30 different categories of metal.  I was really overwhelmed in my ignorance.  In my simple mind their is either "metal" or "metal influenced".  I know too simplistic, but I will learn.  When I got this one from my bro, Boner, I can't even tell you how fortunate I was.  It's been almost twenty years since I've listened to this and it still shreds.  What kind of metal is this though?  All I could come up with was kick ass metal.  When this was released, in 1988 I think, there was death, speed, thrash and maybe a few other kinds of metal.  In my opinion this is the best that metal has to offer.  These guys from Texas really have it going on here, and I don't think this has aged one bit. I've Got An Attitude Problem comp. 7"

Well I had this one started and then accidentally posted it before it was completed, so I deleted it because I didn't want it out there half way done.  And I was just thinking that I felt like I had gotten my common sense back.  Oh well, I was wrong.  It's funny because even here in Nowhere Kansas, life can put us in a downward spiral.  It's sunny today, no tornado or thunderstorm warnings, so things are okay.   This one goes out to Vile76 from France, http://membres.lycos.fr/ultrahc/ who left me like 10 comments, even on some posts that had zero.  Anyone that likes WD40 is alright by me, right Boner.  Thanks to Brian too for sending me Deadhorse's first LP, which I will be posting soon. When I got this one from Ade of the Satanic Malfunctions I was pretty stoked.  This was a dual release from 1987 on Loony Tunes http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=359229008 and BCT&R http://www.geocities.com/chrisbct77/ .  I personally liked every song on here but I'm not sure if these songs by each band appear on other releases.  Some of the other sites in my links are really good about getting that kind of information, but not me.  I'm positive the Raw Power stuff is available elsewhere, but I don't think the Satanic Malfunctions tunes is.  Maybe some of you all can help me out with that.  At this point in time I think I like the Mob 47 and Funeral Oration stuff the best, but this is just an all around good comp.  Every ban is different from the next, sort of.  I have more stuff from Loony Tunes and BCT&R that I will be posting as time goes on.  Give these a listen and let me know what you think. Death Piggy - Love War 7"

I haven't been feeling too well in the head lately.  Not too sure what's going on.  I was born a little nuts but twenty years of abusing my mind and body certainly didn't help.  Oh well it's all good. I had two posts ready to go, one serious and one silly. Well this was another one of those ones I got way back when, I guess in 1984, when it first came out.  No clue as to why I got it but it worked out okay.  Until this post I knew nothing about this band and just considered it some pretty decent silly-core.  Joke band right, or is it satire?  Well I looked here, http://rateyourmusic.com/artist/death_piggy , http://homepages.nyu.edu/~cch223/usa/deathpiggy_main.html , http://www.fuzzlogic.com/flex/d/1266.php , and here, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_Piggy .  Trip out a GWAR connection, at least according to the Wikipedia article.  I don't have any GWAR but I vaguely remember liking them in the late 80's.  I didn't search really hard to find any other Death Piggy posts, but what searching I did do yielded nothing.  These guys seem like pretty good musicians on this recording and at the very least are entertaining and in a couple of songs play some good catchy hardcore.  Be careful though the songs can get stuck in your head, especially Mangoes And Goats, for me.  "When I think of mangoes, I think of goats.  When I think of goats, I think of you." One Man Running - Stress

Well I haven't done a Humboldt post in a while, so here goes.  (I should note here, because there are so many places with Humboldt in the name, there's even a Humboldt Kansas, that we are taking about Humboldt, California, USA.  It is a large sparsely populated county on the northcoast.)  I have done several posts on these guys with some info and thoughts, so do yourself a favor and check those out.  This is not my favorite recording by these guys but it is definitely the cleanest.  I personally think Chuck's voice is too clean and even though they were a poppy punk kind of band, this just steps over the edge a little too much (just my feeble opinion).  I saw these guys play so many times and maybe it's just my preference for live music, but these guys had an edginess that isn't really developed here.  After saying all that, I still love this 7" and these guys never got the recognition they deserved.  The reality is where they were from made it difficult but not impossible and I don't think they were really capable of taking it any further.  Speed and weed can really suck the life out of most people unless they are taken in moderation.  Having used up my pounds of these substances, I know that these are for recreation only and only a few out there can be productive when they make these things a major part of their lives.  Once again, just my opinion.  I can't find much of anything about these guys out on the web so it's up to people like me who were there to pass this on.  Give it a listen.

Go! - There Is No Man 7"

     We have lots of cool stuff going on this weekend so I thought I would get this out for you too.  I've pretty much said everything about this band here, http://mustard-relics.com/2008/04/20/go-root-canal-flexi/ .  I don't like this one as much as the flexi but I still think it's really good later hardcore stuff.  The last song is a good silly rap commentary on Public Enemy.  Anyway give these a listen and you better comment on this one or the previous post. Armed Citizens - Make Sense 7"

I got this pretty much when it first came out.  I was working after school cleaning cages at a pet store so I was making a little cash, $2.25 an hour to be exact.  Less than minimum wage at that time.  There was this killer record store and head shop in Glendale called the Turning Point and another in North Hollywood called Auditory Odyssey.  Both had the usual stoner rock of the time but also had great metal and punk (hardcore) sections.  They were both easy bus rides but I really liked skating to the Turning Point.  I got this one and many others on one of those excursions.  I didn't know much about this band back then and still don't, but probably got it for the killer artwork.
