Chaotic Dischord - Fuck Religion, Fuck Politics, Fuck the Lot of You

I think I dubbed this from one of the mountain of records up at KHSU back when I was in college as a philosophy major.  God I hope they still have that collection for people to enjoy.  I can't imagine them being able to play this on the radio station up there, except late night, early morning.  This was during my Disorder, drunk punk stage, in my musical taste.  Actually Christ On Parade was on the flipside of this tape, so I guess I wasn't that limited in my taste.  If you're looking for intelligent lyrics you better skip Chaotic Discord and head straight for the Christ On Parade.  For what it is though, I really like this stuff.  There are those who know their music and history a lot better than I do, but I always just put this in the English D-beat, drunk punk category. If you like straight ahead, noisy, pretty fast, silly stuff, you'll dig this band.  This was released in 1983 and brought to you 25 years later.  I hope you like a song or two...

Don Baron - Fast Talk Man

I tell you, on what other blog are you going to get a Tormentor post and then Don Baron.

Hace mucho tiempo que ha usado mi espanol y pienso que mi espanol no esta mismo que ustedes ingles.  Mis padrinos estaban de Cuba, vivia por mucho tiempo en un barrio Mexicano, tengo quatro anos de espanol en mi escuela con un maestro de Espana, y mi primera esposa estaba de Venezuela.  Que lastima que ya hablo como un nino de cinco anos.  Asi es la vida.

Well I made my lame attempt at writting in another language, besides my own, and I think it came off pretty weak.  Some of the sites I go to and some of the people who come here use english as a second language.  I appreciate the fact that they do this and I want them to know that I have always admired the fact that elsewhere in the world it is nothing to be able to communicate in 2 or more languages.  I could go into a whole political thing about this but I will save that, especially as there is so much going on in this country about immigration.  All I have to say about it is that if people don't like illegal immigration, don't build higher fences or post more guards, get after the American businesses that are more than willing to hire cheap labor to keep their profit margins high.  I am only a patriot as far as my Native American sensibilities will allow me.

 There are so many issues to talk about but I don't want to alienate others.  The one language we all speak here is MUSIC.

I don't know anything about Don Baron, except that I borrowed this tape, a long time ago, from Gage and never gave it back.  If you want it back bro I'll send it to you.  The only song I really liked on the tape was Fast Talk Man.  At least give it a listen, the lyrics are interesting and the music is a rap reggae thing.

Tormentor - Live Fender's Ballroom 1986

 Okay no more whining, just music and stories.  I got replies from my two favorite bloggers (Good Bad Music & Lo Res Viscera), three really good old friends (Ed, Brian, & Match), and one of the best commentors I've read all over the place (Fernando).  From now on I am like an old juke box with no money in it, after a while it just plays whatever it wants to and just waits.  The picture above has nothing to do with the post, I just don't like posts without pictures.

Well, my wife and I had a great weekend, movies, nature, dogs, country drive, etc.  It was nice to do our own thing and get away from the work grind.  All in all one of the best weekends I've had in a while.  Do not rent "The Fear: Halloween Night".  We are gluttons for horror movies but this one really sucked.

This post is for Brian F. (I was going to do some Mr. Bungle for you but I need to rip it from the tapes yet).  I got this tape back in about 86 or 87 from, you guessed it, Bob and Ron.  As I've said, these guys would go anywhere to catch a band with "some real speed".  A little heavy on the cheesy satan stuff, but all in all a pretty good metal band, I think.  On my tape, after this recording came the Mystery Live Band from my previous post.  I don't think I'll ever find out who that was.  When I looked on the net for any info on this band there were a few Tormentor's but I don't think any of them are this band.  This was an LA band at an LA party that also had Celtic Frost playing.  I don't know the song titles but on a few the singer kind of mutters them.  The tracks that are missing are extended periods of talking, with no music.  My personal favorite is #7, an instrumental.  I hope you dig a tune or two.

Mystery Live Band

 Things are going good here but I think I'm going to take a 4 or 5 day break.  I've been getting a few comments here and there and I know who I can count on, but things are kind of slow considering the number of downloads some of my posts have gotten.  I know I mix it up quite a bit (nobody except for me could like everything I have posted) and talk too much about stuff no one gives a crap about.  It's all good though.  I think the wife and I will take it easy this weekend, maybe get some movies.  I'm going to spend some time doing some rips of tapes, hoping that I'll get my taxes back so I can do some vinyl.  Do me a favor though and check the sites in my links and PLEASE COMMENT on what's already here.

I am leaving yall with a bit of a mystery.  I was ripping some other music and at the end of the tape, I found this.  I have no clue except this is off of a tape I got from Ron Kuka and Bob Kasitz (if you know how to get a hold of these guys let me know).  So who do you think it is or do you give a shit?  I hope everyone is well and has a good weekend

Dieselhed

 This post goes out to the Leftoverking.  Dieselhed was not a Humboldt band but because some of the members were up there playing music when I was, I have included them in the Humboldt category (or did they get their start in Humboldt and move shortly afterward...hmmm...I don't fucking know anymore).  I knew Zach from the dorms and thought he was a pretty trippy guy but I don't remember seeing him too much after that first year.  Virgil was around for most of the time I lived up there playing in various bands including Brent's TV.  Very artsy types of guys and that's kind of where this band was at.  The drummer I think was in Mr. Bungle who were just okay to me (I'l do a couple of posts on them later).  Actually Tre the guitar player was the only member I knew from that band besides the singer Mike who for some reason rubbed me the wrong way.  Dieselhed also, for some period of time had the violinist from Camper Van Beethoven in the band too.  The only time I ever saw these guys play was in San Diego in the mid 90's, I think openning up for Link Wray.  They had a really good set of catchy songs.  It was a total honor to see Link play with them. Lynyrd Skynyrd

 This post may scare off what few people come to this site but wait till I post some Grateful Dead.  I am not a big Lynyrd Skynyrd fan in general but I do like this song.  By themselves they aren't too bad but I can't get past that southern rebel flag thing.  Another thing that I have in the back of my mind is that they remind me of getting drunk in a bar.  I'm not talking 2 or 3 beers buzzed, I mean stupid drunk.  I have been to LOTS and LOTS of bars in my day and 90% of those had LS on the jukebox playing over and over again.  Every night you can count on someone dropping quarters in the machine and playing LS.  I think it would be safe to say that 75% of bars in the U.S.A. have Freebird and/or Sweet Home Alabama on the jukebox.  Am I trying to say they were played out?  I guess for me that's part of it but the reality is that it reminds me of being a drunk loser and what drinking did to my life.  Boo Hoo right?  It would have been nice to have been able to be one of those occasional drinkers like so many people I knew.  If you would have seen me you would have called me a loser too.

Anyway, about a month ago my wife and I were driving to Salina, which is about a 2 1/2 hour drive to take our granddaughter back to her dad's and this song came on the radio.  It definately sounded like LS but to be honest it was a song I had never heard before.  There aren't a lot of choices in radio stations around where we live and they all fall into the categories of country, top 40 and classic rock.  Of those choices my wife and I prefer the classic rock.  It's amazing what they consider classic rock but I'm always happy on those rare occasions when they play Black Sabbath or even rarer, Motorhead and the Stooges.  My wife is always waiting for the AC DC.  Now I just liked this song and maybe it was just that moment but the music was pretty good and the lyrics kind of spoke to me.  Guitar rock, just like you would have found on one of those K-TEL compilations back in the day.  I couldn't find this song when I looked around the net except on Youtube so I used the Vdownloader to pluck the song out of the videos.

Classified Protest - Music For The Streets - demo

This is one of those posts that I got because of magazines like Flipside or Maximum Rock & Roll.  I wasn't a die hard fan of those zines getting every issue they put out but would pick them up every once in a while.  I liked reading the music reviews, which I didn't always agree with, but they did motivate me to action.  I remember we sent in a Garden Weasel demo and the reviewer said something along the lines of "nothing you haven't heard a million times before".  Even though it may have been true, it certainly wasn't how I felt.  We couldn't help but be influenced by what we heard and it was reflected in our original music.  I ended up writing a song about it called, I think appropriately, Heard A Million Times Before.  Some of the lines I remember said "it's all been said before, why say it once more" or " it doesn't matter why, say it twice then die".  I guess what I was saying was that some things need to be said over and over again, and really can't be said too much.  I did write a song about the dangers of cars to skateboarders, which I think is a somewhat original song subject.

Anyway I read a review on this tape so I wrote to the band and got one.  This Classified Protest demo was recorded in 1984 and I think I got it around that time.  I don't know if you would call it punk or oi! but I was into that English sound at the time.  I thought and still think this is pretty good stuff.  I think I wrote to one of these guys for a little while and thought they were very cool.  On the flip side of the tape they had another band's rehearsal that I will have to post some time.  Give this stuff a listen and maybe you'll like a song or two.  My favorite song is Thatchers Britain.

Wehrmacht

An interesting small world kind of thing happened with this post.  I had some Wehrmacht on a tape, the same one I got the live Condemned Attitude and the Spazztic Blurr demo posts off of.  I had no clue as to where the Wehrmacht was recorded from, but was going to post it anyway.  I mean what the hell it's music and that's what this site is half way about, sharing music.  I figured someone might come along, as they've done before and give me some kind of a heads up on what it was.  If you check my links, those are the sites I visit regularly and I happened to go to, http://www.goodbadmusic.com/ one of my favorite sites, for several reasons.  Well, bam, there he had some Wehrmacht.  Guess what, he had the same stuff I had except my copy only had five songs.  So what I was going to post would have been an incomplete version of the Wehrmacht demo.  Here is the first song from my tape,

Drilling For Mom - Demo

  Probably nobody outside of people who were in Humboldt County NorCal in the mid to late 80's will appreciate this post but here it is.  They definately weren't a hardcore band but, I don't care what anyone says though, this is punk, even if it is ten years late.  After I moved up there in 87, they were the first (or Nuisance) band I saw.  Around the same time there were bands like the Leftovers, the Jane Maxwell Band, Ulcer Creator and so on.  They didn't blow me away or anything but I did really like them.  I got to know the people in the band over the years and they were pretty cool.  I don't think this band lasted very long but there were many more to follow, even though I can't remember the names of the bands right now.  Maybe the Humboldt people will help me out.  Kevyn D. the guitar player and Peggy M. the singer had been in bands before I was up there and are probably in bands still.  I really can't remember anymore about this band so why don't you give this a listen.  My personal favorite is Pulp Fart and if you've ever lived near a pulp mill, you'll know what they're talking about. Condemned Attitude - Live (tape)

 You know where I live, and I'm sure it's like this in other places too, people are friendly, at least on the surface.  In reality most people are just as two faced and backstabbing as they are any place in the world.  Here, people wave to each other as they pass each other on the road.  I'm not talking a big hand shaking wave or a politicians wave, but just lifting a few fingers off of the steering wheel.  Not all the time though because some people forget, think they're too cool, or they just can't be bothered.  When I was a kid coming out here to visit I thought it was pretty cool because where I grew up in the Rampart district of LA people were not friendly.  I do it now even if it does feel a little bit dorky, because I am a friendly person and you never know what's going to happen.  Maybe sometime I might break down on one of these lonely two lane highways in the middle of a freezing cold night and they might be the ones to pull over and give me a hand, or not.  I know my wife, who is a tall good looking woman, had a tire blowout one night and in the ten minutes it took for me to get there, she must have had ten good old boy weirdos looking to help her out.  Now me, no matter where I've lived, it could be forever before someone stops to lend me a hand.  When I lived in Cali I always had a gas can and my skateboard with me in my vehicle.  If I had to I always knew I could skate to the nearest gas station even if it was miles away.  In fact when my truck was stolen years ago, whoever got it, hit the motherload because they got all my tools, my gas can and my trusty skateboard.  That was the deck my brothers up in Humboldt built me out of wheels, trucks and a beat up old deck they just had laying around.  That board got me around everywhere and I don't know what kind of wheels they were, but they were the best for sliding on the downhills.  Do people even do power slides anymore?  I forgot where I was going with all of that so on with the music.

I don't remember where I got this tape, probably Ron and Bob, but it also had Spazztic Blurr and Wehrmacht on it, so I listened to it a lot in the mid 80's.  I don't know where this was recorded or the tracks.  I used what the singer says for the tracks and somewhere else in there it says it was a MRR show.  I seem to remember this band was made up of members of Attitude Adjustment and Condemned.  I always liked the music and what made it really good was the talking in between, there's some pretty funny stuff.  When I editted the tracks I seperated some of the longer periods of taking and a point where there is a broken string.  Remember the track titles are just what I got off the tape.  The sound quality tells me it's either a good crowd recording or a bad soundboard.  If you know more about it make a comment please.

Strong Intention - Total Extermination

  Well I got zero comments from my last Strong Intention post so I thought I would do another one.  Give people what they don't want to hear right?  Actually I've run across a lot of great sites that get thousands of hits but very few comments so I'm not going to whine about that.  Please check my links and you will not be disappointed with what amounts to just the tip of the iceberg on what's out there.

You all have probably already seen the American Hardcore documentary and I've heard people go both ways on how good they thought it was.  I personally thought it was pretty good and for the most part accurate.  What matters most is that someone was willing to even do a movie with hardcore as it's subject in the first place.  They did talk about hardcore dying in about 86 and I'm not sure I agree with that.  The punk is or isn't dead was a common topic there for a while too.  The way I look at it is that music just evolves.  I don't want music to stay the same all the time, I want it to go to the next level.  Sometimes that change isn't so good but screw it because it's the people behind it all that make it happen.  I was one of the first people to make a big deal  and complain about crossover when that was the thing going on.  Now I'm a little more realistic and realize that people can do whatever they want to do with their music or their lives for that matter.  The old breeds die off and new ones come and fill the gap.  We don't have to like it but that's the way it is.  We need to spend more time worrying about what we're doing than complaining about what other people are doing.

I kind of went off on a tangent there so here's the music.  I got this CDR at the same place I got the other one.  This one I know is also out of print because I have # 26 out of 50 made for the tour with Cripple Bastards they did in 2002.  Like I said on the other post, check out their site http://www.strongintention.com/ but most of their stuff is out of print.  This is good stuff I think.  Here's some samples.

A.R.R. - An Idea Whose Time Has Come (demo)

I saw these guys play in 86 at the Olympic with a bunch of my high school brothers.  I can't remember exactly with who but my crew was Deustche, Match, Enoch, and Ivan.  This show headlined the English Dogs, along with the UK Subs, Youth Brigade and ARR openned.  There may have been one or two more but I've already talked about how horrible my memory is.  The English Dogs sucked I thought.  The UK Subs were killer in that 70's punk kinda way.  I never saw a guy more covered in spit than the singer of that band.  Whoever thought of spitting on bands while they play was an idiot.  Youth Brigade was my favorite.  They just all around rocked the whole show and about the only time there wasn't fighting was during "Sink With California".  Non stop fights at this packed show and just about every "punk" gang in SoCal was represented.  LADS, Suicidals, Circle One and several skinhead gangs.  Funny thing about these gangs is that at this show they didn't fight each other, they just did the old 5 on 1 to random people.  Just like every gang ever, tough as hell when there's ten of them but quiet as a mouse by themselves.  This was the scene though at shows during this time.  ARR from Arizona, openned and I just dug them so I got this tape for a couple of dollars.  Your basic hardcore band very typical of the time.  The sad thing was that after the show, when we got out to my bug, the stereo had been stolen, so we couldn't listen to the tape on the way home.  Give these guys a listen and maybe you'll like a song or two.

Barrington Levy - Here I Come

  One of the neat things about having your own blog is that you can do whatever you want.  I think most visitors would rather hear the hardcore stuff, but they will just have to wait until the next post.  While I was on a mellow tip I thought I would post some Barrington Levy.  I first got aquainted with him through stuff he did with the Long Beach Dub Allstars.  I got some more stuff from my buddy Dirty Steve that would be awesome, but it's on tape and I was too screwed up to pay attention to the recording levels and it's pretty blown out.  This guy has been around for a long time and has all kinds of music out there.  Check my Positive Vibration or Long Beach Dub Allstars posts for more of his killer voice.  These particular versions aren't as roots as some I've heard but this is what I have.  The first song is kind of a rap and the other two have more synthesizers.  Give these a listen.

Mad Lion - Predatah or Prey

 I like mixing it up and I was thinking about Gage so I thought I would do a post for him.  I'm not a huge rap fan as I've mentioned on other posts but I like this one.  I guess it's the fact that I like reggae and this guy has a reggae backround.  I had heard some of his stuff before, check my Long Beach Dub Allstars post, and thought I would get some of his own music.  I got this off of ebay about three years ago for cheap and kind of dug it.  Gage I hope you dig it because I don't have much more besides the almighty Public Enemy.  Actually Gage if you have anything that you think is worthwhile, send it to me so I can post it.  This is just a sampling because as far as I know this is still in print.  You can check out more here, www.madlion.com and here, www.killahpride.com .  Every kind of music has something to offer.

Grout - Demo (Live on KHSU)

I've been wanting to do this post for a while, Grout, the last band I played in.  Now this demo just rips.  Two reasons, it just does and I'm no longer in the band.  Grout was formed after Garden Weasel ended and Steve and I were left without a band.  We hooked up with Jeff on guitar and Ty on bass, both of whom had been playing music for some time.  I can't remember the bands that Jeff played in but he and Steve went on to be in the Hitch (which I will post another time).  Ty I think had played in a band called Tyrranicide in the bay area.  I was only in the band for a little over a year because I moved out of the area.  They continued on as a three piece and really tore it up.  I can't remember what all they recorded but I will find out and try to post more.  This recording is live on KHSU which by now from my other posts you should be able to tell was a popular thing to do. Do yourself a favor and give this band a listen, ahead of it's time.

Spazztic Blurr

Alright, I got a request for Spazztic Blurr but I am only half way able to comply.  It's not live but I have no idea where it's from.  There's no static so it must be from a demo of some kind.  I know when you rip from vinyl you get the static and some say it's cool but what about tape hiss?  There was a period of time where I didn't care if I wrote down tracks on dubbed tapes but now it really pisses me off.  On this particular 60 minute tape I have this along with Wehrmacht studio stuff on one side and live Condemned Attitude on the other.  I was working at a law firm as a file clerk for my Aunt Teresa in the summers in between 11th and 12th grade I think when I got it.  Some of those lawyers were real twisted coked out dudes.  That was over 20 years ago and I'm not making a whole lot money more than I was making then.  Now I'm getting bummed out.  This band was pretty incredible so for those of you who haven't heard them before at least give track 9 a listen.  Listen to the whole song because even though it's silly they make a good point about what was going on in the hardcore scene at the time.  I think I only have half of track one here because somewhere in my own twisted past I must have pressed record instead of play.  Were you smart and broke out the tabs on your cassettes or an idiot like me?  Please enjoy and let me know if you recognize this recording.  On some of these direst links I had to reduce the kbs because I have to be under 7mb on each file.

Wehrmacht - Russian River Theatre 03/22/87

I have to admit I don't know much about this band.  I got this during a short period where I liked bands just because they played fast.  I still like fast bands but there's got to be more to them than just speed.  When I tried to find a photo it came up with a bunch of old Nazi pictures and a couple of album covers.  As far as I knew this was a joke band that was somehow related to Spazztic Blur or vice versa.  I got this from good old Ron K. and Bob K. about the time this was recorded.  I was told it was a soundboard which I believe but the mix is not good.  All drums (broken snare?) and vocals.  A little bit into the first song all the levels go down on my tape which I think needs to get blamed on the mixer.  There's a lot of talking in between songs which is kind of funny but I went ahead and edited it so you can just here each song.

AC DC

  This is my 50th post so I though I would do something special.  My wife Kim's favorite band is hands down AC/DC.  Pretty far from my punk rock roots but I have to say I really like these guys too.  When we drive places together we listen to them because it's the one band we can both enjoy.  My granddaughter, Lael, has joined in the fun too and loves to sing the chorus to Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap.  My wife's favorite is Thunderstruck so I thought I would post those two songs for you to enjoy.  She put's up with a lot from me so I thought I would do one for her.
