From what could, very possibly (probably?) be my favorite horror movie The Cabin In The Woods. I don't have anything sophisticated to say about why I like it, but I feel like there are just a thousand aspects of it that make it an excellent watch. Special effects/gore, superior acting, horror humor, meaty story, original concept, homage to the horror genre in general...
Was listening to the Rolling Stones "(i Can't Get No) Satisfaction" a week or so ago on one of the local classic rock stations, and some of the lyrics just struck me...

Then yesterday this kid that works at one of the group home I oversee, saw a pack of my smokes and said he had never seen those before. I told him that I get them from the reservation, that their all natural and that they only cost me $20 a carton. As I was telling him this young guy that, I noticed that he was smoking menthols of some cheap generic brand and I thought to myself, he can't be a man 'cause he doesn't smoke the same cigarettes as me.
My buddy Bjorn heard that I had been talking about my epiphany in music, having scored a decent pair of headphones and hit me up with this rager of a tune, translated as headphones...

Liam's Corner: My Son and I are talking about doing a mixtape like folx are doing these days, that harkens back to my youth of making actual mix tapes for people. If I took the time to do one of those for you, it meant you were sorta special, because a lot of time and thought went into those. For our mixtape, I imagine we will be doing lots of stoney rap type guys as that's what Liam's into. He's not really into the gangsta variety, I tried to some of that the other day...

So I had mixtape on my mind and the other day on the good classic rock station (the one that doesn't play the same shit over and over again) played three great tunes in a row. Funny thing about it too was that all three had to do with some aspect of mental health (an issue I have struggled with for a long time). So armed with a them and a mixtape as a purpose, I woke up in the middle of the night and two more song thought up to add to the initial three from the radio. I went ahead and stayed up for the next hour or two thinking up off the top of my head and then ultimately doing a search. A lot of the songs are common hits, not too many obscure ones, but with the hits I tried to find decent sounding live versions. All in all a good listen. So if you download that you'll find I added some samples to make it mine so to speak, and it will fit neatly on an 80 minute CDr...
Been a while since we featured a band from the indomitable Humboldt County, this time around, Hockaloogie, who we featured before with their Houses Of The Oly cassette. There's this Humboldt Punk group on Facebook that I lurk around occasionally and virtually ran into a woman named Kathy Frasier who happens to be married to Tyce, who was the singer. She offered to send me this 7" from a box in her garage, so that we could have it here. Hell fucking yeah! Saw these guys numerous times and played gigs with them at least a couple of times, but brain damage prevents me from recollecting specifics. As a result listening to this 7" was like something fresh and new, not something 22 years old. All and all, this is a pretty killer little record. Real snotty slightly metallic catchy post-punk with a little jazziness thrown in, a sweet combination only a Humboldt band could churn out. Not sure which I like better, the tape or the 7", but it's not a competition is it, they are both very indicative of a extremely vibrant scene Humboldt had in the late 80s, early 90s. The hit on this thing is "Tights" in my opinion and if there's any criticism of the record, it's that there isn't enough music. Thanx to Kathy and Tyce for the putting this in my lap and allowing anyone else who stumbles across this place to have a listen...in a box, in the garage, is no place for good music...
